Herper of the Month - September 2005
Erik McCormick

"My fascination with herps began when I was about 8 years old. We were living in Missouri and my father had brought home a ribbon snake that he had found in the field. We kept it and fed it small toads and cricket frogs found at the local river. It was too long before I ventured into the nearby woods with a friend to look for snakes on my own."

"I moved to New Mexico when I was 12 years old. It was vastly different from Missouri and with the internet years away, I didn't know how to look for herps in the desert. Besides, I thought only big mean bullsnakes and venomous rattlesnakes called the desert home. Not wanting to find those snakes, I started losing interest in herps. Years passed and when I turned 22, my girlfriend Kristin bought me a ball python for my birthday. It sparked my interest again and with the age of the internet, I learned about
road cruising desert herps at night
."
"I studied up on my local herps habits and habitats and soon I started finding more and more. Not wanting to deal with actually keeping herps, I bought a digital camera so I could always remember all the herps I found. This also made me want to start taking better photos, so I began learning about photography...which is another passion of mine."
"It is always fun to meet up with people sharing similar interests in the field."
