Red Milk Snake

"On the second afternoon we were walking the road. I had gotten ahead of the group and paused for others to catch up. As I waited, I heard a faint, high pitched squeaking coming from the woods on the side of the road. I recognized it as the distress call of a rodent. I pictured in my mind a nest of pinkies being attacked by something. They don’t call it “Snake Road” for nothing; if something was attacking something, it likely was a snake."

"There had been some heavy rain 2 days before and the leaf litter was fairly well packed down. I tried to focus on where I thought the sound was coming from and saw one leaf move up and down. It was very subtle and if I hadn’t heard the squeaking and been focused on the spot it was coming from I never would have seen it. I called to the group that I had found something, then I reached down and picked up the leaf. This is exactly what I saw."

"The snake was very intent and focused on eating his meal and our presence did not slow him in the least. The rodent was some kind of vole (big head, ears hidden by fur, short tail. Maybe a woodland vole or prairie vole.)"
