I agree that it was likely a juvenile, but admit that it could be a smaller subspecies. This specimen was unidentifiable until it stopped, and if you took your eye off of it, it was very difficult to find again. Thanks all! I appreciate the kind words. It is a lot of work, but I enjoy doing it. Unfortunately, I haven't posted anything new for 3 months or so. My new job is a little more demanding, and the herps have been more scarce lately. :) That said, I still average around 90 hits a day for a simple snak...

One of the best herping articlels ever written! So this was 2001, right? Were AZ Blacks ever lumped with abyssus, as mentioned, or was that a simple typo?

Sidewinders are known to climb into bushes when attempting to hide. I've nexer put a rattlesnake in a bush, but they often end up in them once they know you are "after" them.

I read several stories about this snake, and was eventually able to track down the "real" one. The one you posted here, is by far the most bastardized version. The snake was found in St. Augustine, Florida and measured 7' 3".
