With box turtles unless they are outside or you have a really big enclosure with deep substrate the plants will get thrashed. Outside with boxies I've used strawberries with success. Grass and various weeds work too but I like strawberries.

yes i did get them at the pomona show. I take it you got yours from the same guy as he was the only one with loggerheads there?
I dont know why these are so uncommon at the shows. That goes for all the musk and mud turtles. They arent that hard to breed and they are extremely easy to keep.

I actually use those for my bloods. They are great for large snakes, but they are only available in stores around christmas. You could try and get a concrete mixing tub.

I have to agree with Chris, tubs are the best way to keep them. You don't have to worry about them digging out or so deep that they never some up. Mine actually live in a permanent structure. cook it in the oven for about 1-2 hours at 450. Everything thats in that dirt will die. I honestly dont see a problem with keeping a banded on dirt. They live on the stuff out in the wild, and though captivity is not the wild, it should not be a problem.

You are right about both things. They do live a really long time for such small creatures, and they aren't very prolific. Plus i think they would need live insects for food. That's why i didn't really try to breed them. Though they make really good pets if you are looking for that kind of thing.
