I really like decomposed granite (DG) as a substrate. It forms a crust that holds up well for fossorial animals to burrow under. The State does manage migrant bird species and there are many that have been given various State special status designations.I don't think they manage part time bird visitors either.

take a look at Nick's snake in this post. I don't know what the species name is but I can tell you that by just looking at the brackish meshed pattern of the boa... That it is an intergrade. the pure rosy Boas are more well-defined stripes.... I would have to assume that the same thing would happen...

I just came accross a helleri that was out sunning yesterday in Los Angeles county. I think the temperature was somewhere in the high 50s to maybe around 60. It was definitely the coldest I had ever seen a crote active down here.

Nematophora, (Gordian or horsehair worm) probably just emerged from the mantis. They are often seen after rains. Pretty cool.

Looks like you all had a great time! I'm not an expert, but I really don't think that tadpole is a spadefoot. I think it's a western toad tadpole. The eyes are too wide-set and the nostrils are too far forward from the eyes to be a spade, IMO. Also, the pupils do not look like those of spadefoot tad...
