Also, the only grub that could possibly at that size is the larva of an Eastern Hercules Beetle, Dynastes tityus.

Awesome fish! I will, however, say that is one thing I DO NOT want coming in my direction at 50-60 mph though!

Re: Shenandoah Brook Trout
Is that a Rappahannock drainage Phoxinus oreas ? It doesn't seem to display the heavier black spotting I am used to seeing in the James drainage. It's interesting, but I can usually tell the difference just from looking, which is especially weird since the Rappahannock population was supposedly intr...

Re: Cool black widow I found today.
That's a pretty one. In VA I find that most of them have a little red on the back, but I can't say I've found one with that much red. Often ours also have a white ring around the red on the back though, which makes them striking animals nonetheless. I love widows.

Re: Costa Rica- October 2010 (mega DUW)
Absolutely awesome post. Thanks for all the awesome pics, and I will mention that I enjoyed the insects as much as the herps. Amazing plants as well. I have forgotten much of what I had learned about Central American insect fauna, but I will add that your first moth is a Black Witch ( Ascalapha odor...

Wow, awesome. Congrats on the cinerum. I've heard they are hard to find. I can't wait to head west to TN or KY and see all those darter species...

Re: Anyone in Richmond, VA?
I'm a non-avid herper. Not in richmond, but not far away either, in Fredericksburg. I have been obsessed with fish for quite some time (but was obsessed with insects and herps as a kid) and have just found that herping is actually a relatively popular hobby as opposed to just flipping rocks and logs...

Re: recent stuff from the ozarks
I don't know how host-specific it is, but those lumps look an awful lot like a parasite, Yellow Grub (Clinostomum marginatum) that I find fairly frequently while sampling native fish. I wonder if that newt happened across a dense group of them, or ate the wrong invertebrate. I would say that snake l...

Re: Hello from Virginia
Thanks very much guys. I feel much more welcome now that I have gotten a few less defensive replies. I was about to write this organization off by my initial reception, but you guys have reeled me back in, and I am reading and enjoying greatly the content on the forum. It does indeed seem like this ...

Re: Hello from Virginia
Thank you for your response Dan. That honest and respectful reply was quite helpful. While I do understand the general attitude towards newcomers (the native fish hobby has taken a turn towards mistrust in favor of protection of resources and good collection sites, especially towards sensitive speci...

Re: Hello from Virginia
Ok, I was sorta wondering why after so many views, no one wanted to say hello. I take it you guys are against collection/captive breeding of these animals? I'm not out to step on toes or offend anyone, but am here to genuinely learn, about the organization as well as the animals. Please feel free to...

Hello from Virginia
Hello all, my name is Derek and I'm currently located in Fredericksburg VA. I've been a lover of all things cold blooded my entire life and have just discovered that just like I'm not the only one who likes to view/collect native fish (see nanfa.org) I'm also not the only one who likes to view/colle...
