Re: Kern desert

I can't get over how close that Rosy's ground color is to the color of the soil you photographed him on, not to mention how well-defined it's striping is. Very nice find indeed. Agreed. Given how similar to the ground color and small he was, I would never have spotted this one if he were not on pav...

Re: whitewater

You are there and stopping for snakes means you are actively hunting. If you are actively fishing, even just to look and then release, you still need the license. To me, I see the same thing here. I still agree that this is ridiculous, that one should be able to stop and remove an animal from a dang...

Re: whitewater

Craig, I do have the license now. I do not collect and therefore did not think I needed one back then. The officer did not say I cannot pick the up without one, it was someone else later that mentioned it so I went ahead and got one to prevent any future issues and allow myself the temporary possess...

Re: Kern Co desert cruising

I thought it might be a katydid of some kind, but wasn't positive. Saw 2 that night, and have seen them there before, so get up to Kern and check them out! Found a walking stick on the road one night a few years ago as well. Good thing the platyrhinos was on a desolate road. He was small and I barel...

Re: whitewater

The fake snake looks like a king from the car. By stopping and checking it out, you are clearly looking for snakes. You cannot pick up a kingsnake without a FL, so yes they can check and write up for that. I stopped for it my first trip there. Did not have a license, but with camera in hand explaine...

Kern Co desert cruising

Cruising the desert of Kern Co CA last night. Started off seeing more herpers than herps. Wasn't seeing anything on the road but did stop and check out some finds others had made. Mojave Sidewinder http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/metalpest/So%20Cal%20Snakes/cerastes3.jpg Sidewinder pair. They...

Re: whitewater

Thanks for the help on the toad ID! Love the anurans just not familiar with identifying them and didn't spend much time with him as we were hoping to spot some snakes we've never seen out there.

Does the SSC listing mean we cannot move them off the road?

Re: whitewater

Red spotted? I ruled that out quick when I didn't see any red spots. Body does look similar now that I take a closer look. Read online later that there are arroyo toads in whitewater, was really hoping I happened across one, but it didn't really look like any pictures I could find of any species. Fo...

Made a trip to the famous road. Pretty cool out, 61F at dusk and windy so not a lot of activity. Can't ever seem to get out there on a good night.
