Hans, its a great book. I had a chance to read it prior to publishing and thought the author did a wonderful job. He also used some of my old photos of Ditmars.

I spent some time in that same area last year. All of the jaguars from that area are larger than the norm. Their prey is almost exclusively caiman and capybara according to the biologist at the site. I was able to see 3 jaguar in 2 days. Pretty spectacular area.

Thank you for this post. Did you see the wild spec bear in the Mindo area? To answer the question regarding lions, mountain lions have the largest range of any land carnivore in the Americas from Canada to the tip of South America. I was lucky to see 2 different Mountain Lions in Brazil last year.

Gerry, you are correct, its just that I'm old school. I worked with John on Chinese alligators and radiated tortoises among others. Yes, he worked there for many years and worked on a number of herp projects. In fact there is a turtle & tortoise facility in Ojai named in his honor.

This one was found within 1/2 mile of interstate 10 and the area is moist and shady. Across the street, I found fringe toed lizards. Yes, I've walked into the hills and have seen tantilla, nightsnake, pacifics and gopher. I've also seen stripes & reds and possibly a patchnose. Usually later in July & August. I'm up for it!!

I am an avid birdwatcher. I spent a day at the Inka Terra Hotel in Peru and picked up 27 species in 10 minutes. Incredible area up around 7,000 feet inthe Andes. Closest town to Machu Picchu.

I'll be there for 7 days on a small (20passenger) boat , then its up to Machu Picchu. I know there are numerous hummer species there and I'm looking forward to it. Thanks again for some more great photos!!!
