At first we thought it was some marking for a study but that is not the typical place where turtle shells are marked. Maybe someone else might have some idea as to what that hole is.

Check boards in early summer and early fall. They are still cold and wet in the early spring and don't produce well then in my experience. Usually snakes retreat under boards to assist in shedding so any time of day for a board can work, just as long as it isn't late summer when it is hot and dried ...

Yes the Jeff I posted is a female and she was really plump! The mass majority were all males moving to the vernal. It is the same here with mainly males moving first then females.

I was off by a couple of hours but I'm sure a lot of animals moved on the 14th in the AM. Here are a few from March 13th in the PM. Yes it is believed that ringneck venom is prey specific and toxicity varies among the subspecies. I just wish there was more literature on it because I enjoy learning new things and for some reason this topic sparked my interest so I felt the need to start fishing for information.

Last year in Southern MD it was the beginning of march and in western MD is was the beginning of April....that freeze line was rough. This year I will say the majority will be March 14th.

I've always noticed increased movement in late August and early Septemeber in relation to them moving back to hibernacula and most years the increased front movements caused by hurricane season also push the snakes. I didn't spend enough time around water this year, I think I only saw 3 or 4 snappers this year! Super depressing for me because they are one of my favorite turtles!
