I did at least get at least a few good herps in the last few weeks, including a Collared Lizard and a pair of Prairie Rattlesnakes

I can definitely understand discretion with native species or species that inhabit sensitive habitats/microhabitats (exfoliating rock, etc). But wouldn't decline or elimination of introduced herp populations be a good thing :P

I think you must be mistaken on the NZ rat...New Zealand is not considered to have any native rodents, nor is a separate species recognized for the rats that live there. The only vertebrate example I can think of off the top of my head might be feral cats, which in Australia have been getting larger...

Yep...John Fox took me and I did indeed get great looks at the squirrel. Much smaller than I imagined. Glad to finally get that species under my belt.

I twitched the Denver Ross's Gull Last November; that was my last lifer.

on the nonbird front should hopefully get Southern Flying Squirrel here in D.C. tonight

I have had friends capture African Clawed Frogs in San Diego County, so they are certainly there. I have personally seen Green Anoles in Balboa Park, but am not convinced they are an established population, and not simply occasional escapees from the San Diego Zoo, which uses them as feeders. I know of birders who have been harassed by border patrol and homeland security, largely either along the Mexico Border or birding around bridges and dams. My guess is the driving along backroads at night slowly probably strikes people as more suspicious than a lot of birder activity, and that is why.
