Herpetology course in the Bay Area

There's a herpetology course starting next weekend in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's run by Dr. Robert Macey with Hank Fabian through Merritt College. The subject matter will be student interest-driven. Genomics, plate tectonics driving speciation, how to tissue, preserve specimens, monitor popula...

I've been hitting up the Oakland hinterlands at least once a week, no snakes yet. The Elgaria, Sceloporus and Plestiodon are hot and active when it's sunny, though. All the usual salamanders, frogs and toads are out in force. Can't flip a log without a half-dozen Batrachoseps, that'll be fun for ya....

They're everywhere, too. Walking through Oakland and Berkeley at night (even during the day, sometimes) when it's wet, it is not uncommon at all to see Batrachoseps and Aneides walking around the pavement.

In your area I've found heaps of Taricha , Aneides , Batrachoseps , and quite a few Ensatina , though the past few weeks they've really tapered off. They're in the forested gullies, and under rotting logs in the bottoms and lower sides of valleys. You can even find Aneides and Batrachoseps in urban ...

I've been finding California kings every time I go flipping around Lafayette, they're under small rocks most of the time. I've only been in the area during in the day (09:00-21:00), and not had any cross the trails in front of me.

Good luck!
