Great post and awesome shots. It was fun to look through and remember several shared experiences there. Nice finds, Jeremy. It's amazing how skittish those guys are.

One of our local garter dens has been active with Valley and Wandering (they den together there). We also found a pair of rubber boas nearly two weeks ago. We'll have to get some photos together to post.

I have a whole collection of these, actually. I may have to make a post of them sometime. Basically, when I go through my shots and find two or more images that were taken from a slightly different angle, I turn them into a gif. It offers a stereoscopic feel (a sense of depth perception) that you ca...

Great Basin Rattlesnake yawn

As is typical of the GBR (lutosus) that we find, this one never rattled or struck. However, this is the first time I've seen one yawn. I was able to snap a few photos (as fast as my flash would recycle, since it was night), so I turned those pics into a gif. http://i.imgur.com/x5l1tpq.jpg http://i.i...

Not the only one out looking for 'snakes'

I work in an office building at the edge of town, and I have a little place just 10 minutes away where I go from time-to-time to flip boards to try to find a snake or two during lunch. I went out and didn’t find anything, so feeling a little dissatisfied, I started to drive back toward the office, b...

With the Chorus Frogs, they will stop calling, but give it 5 minutes or so, and they'll start right up again- even to the point that you can be right on top of them. As for shining a light on them, they can be good hiders. There are two in this picture. Can you spot the other? https://farm4.staticfl...

Pretty much anywhere in the valley that is marshy will yield Western Chorus Frogs, especially around the Salt Lake wetlands. You can walk up to them, and they'll quiet down, but within minutes they'll start up again. Doing this, you can get so close that it nearly hurts your ears. https://farm4.stat...

My most frequented spot for road cruising puts over 200 miles on my car in a typical night -75m out there, 75m back, and the road of choice is 25 miles long (down and back is 50m). In the prime of the season, I go one to three times a month. So gas is usually my biggest expense. As mentioned, camera...
