Re: What was your last lifer?...
Common Tern was my latest lifer. But it was somewhat iffy. My favorite recent lifer was a few weeks ago, a Mississippi Kite. Gorgeous bird. Didn't have my camera, naturally. Even though i KNEW i was going to look for this bird.

Return after lengthy absence and FB Group recommendation
Hey all. It's been a long summer. If y'all remember, I was fortunate enough to be able to go to the smokies for a couple months to work as a field tech on an avian research project. Birds aside, I did get a tiny bit of herping done. Mainly looking for salamanders. The only snakes I found just happen...

Smokies Here I Come!
I know this is a herping forum, but I'm excited and I'm sharing. Plus stay tuned, there may be herping. I've been offered a volunteer position for the summer at The Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. They're covering my room and board. It's a field research position where I'll be working wi...

Re: Common, but a lifer
Pretty much everything is a lifer to me. The life of a newbie. Which makes herping so exciting. I'm on a snake kick here lately. Ever since the snakes came out of their burrows and I actually started seeing them and picking them up instead of chopping their heads off. Seriously, the difference in on...

Lifer Dekay's brown snake

This ones special to me because I found it all on my own.
My first Dekay's Brown Snake. Now I want to find a ring neck snake, a garter and a rough green.

Common, but a lifer

I consider this the official start of my snake herping season. Since this one I found all by myself. Apparently it's common in southeast Louisiana but it's a first for me.

Re: Mississippi herpers
Going to bump this up. Seeing as how it seems herping season is here for the south, I'm looking for herping buddies in the south ms area. Especially if you know of any areas around hattiesburg that you could point me to.

Re: Mississippi herpers
I used to live there and helped the Hattiesburg/ Desoto area extensively. Lots of good stuff to see there, from EDBs and Corals to Black Pines and Rainbow Snakes! I'm still iffy on snakes. I grew up being taught to kill them on sight. Except king snakes. Im quite new to herping so I've only flipped...

Re: Mississippi herpers
I honestly think everyone is repressed here. I mean you go telling someone you're going looking for snakes in the woods and they look at you like you're addled. It's seriously against the consensus to be interested in herps. At least from where I'm at.

Mississippi herpers
So I'm wondering if there's many people in south ms on here? Between here and on fb groups there's a fair bunch over in Louisiana. But I haven't found too many people from mississippi
Re: Intro
Thanks simus. I find ms slimy salamanders all the time. But that's about it. Apparently where I'm located isn't good salamander habitat. I have to go elsewheres to find any other species. As in, driving an hour or so away.

I do indeed.
Intro
Not sure if there's a designated place to introduce oneself. But my name is Aaron and I'm a biology major in south Mississippi. As far as the chapters here, I live in and attend college in Mississippi but my home is on the Ms/la state line near the bogue chitto national wildlife refuge. I'm quite ne...
