Re: Lenses for Herping Australia

Well while fiddling around with the diopter some more after reading Bill's suggestions I found an interesting little discrepancy with the Polaroid 500d. All of the online sales information across multiple sites says it's a +2 magnification, as you would expect, but the packaging actually says it's +...

I think we all learn a little bit more about quality photography every single time you post. Great series Bill, thanks for sharing it with us.

Re: Lenses for Herping Australia

Hello again, thanks for all the excellent advice so far. This is the set up I've ended up with as of now: EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens Polaroid 500d Achromatic diopter Yongnuo YN-14EX TTL LED Macro Ring Flash I've only just got everything together so I haven't had more than an evening to play aro...

Re: Inland Australia

Wonderful pictures! I think the ciliaris is my favorite out of the bunch. That tail makes you think of dinosaurs. Did you come across any goannas on your trip?

Re: Lenses for Herping Australia

Hi Chris, Thanks for the reply, think that is a smart idea but unfortunately I have a few too many hobbies to deep dive into another like photography. I sort of have to pick and choose what to dump time and money into, so for photography I'll settle with just being able to take acceptable documentat...

Re: Lenses for Herping Australia

That's what I was afraid of with the +3. I passed on that one, but found a 58mm Polaroid version of the 500D for $50.00, so I ordered on of those to play with. These achromats are surprisingly hard to find. My next, hopefully last, equipment question is in regards to flash. I have been really intere...

Re: Lenses for Herping Australia

Hi there, Thanks for the reply, I actually read the thread you made some time back on diopters and thought that would be a good option too (thanks by the way, for such a thorough explanation of diopters. that's been the most straight forward post on them I've seen anywhere). I looked into the canon ...

By the way, I really appreciate the help. I am fairly lost with all the lens options and possibilities out there.

Re: Lenses for Herping Australia

You know, I was thinking of that very same option with the 70-200f4. I do plan to shoot at night though, I will be doing a good amount of road cruising in between treks out in the bush. I will pick up a used example of the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens and play with that one for a few days to test out...

Re: Lenses for Herping Australia

Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate it a lot. So, I looked into the rental option (very cool by the way, I had not seen this before), but to rent the equipment for the length of my trip plus a bit more for practice before hand would eat up most of my budget and I wouldn't get to use the equipme...

Lenses for Herping Australia

Hello All, I'm going to be taking a herping trip to Australia in November, starting in Broome and working my way down to Coral Bay. Varanids are my particular drug of choice and have been my entire life, so I've been dreaming of going to Oz since I was a kid. This trip came up pretty short notice, b...

Re: Craziest Border Patrol Story

....The only time I got harassed at all was when I camped a ways off-road just a a couple km north of the BP checkpoint inside of A-B State Park. I had driven off onto a dirt road and parked the car off the road, then set up my camp well off the road behind some bushes. In the middle of the night a...

Re: Why You Dont Collect

The most I've ever done is collect an animal and log its GPS location (Or mark the spot of collection before GPS), keep it in captivity for a few weeks to a few months, then re-release at the catch spot. I've only ever done this when I had no captive herps at my home and when the field collected ani...

Re: Traveling with hook.

..... so I fastened the hook to my backpack with zip-ties (and another little note saying what it was), and checked the whole thing Clearly this can work sometimes . I don't think it'll work all the time . Between the potential for damaging luggage, and possibly injuring the people who throw the lu...

Re: Traveling with hook.

This may be a bit late for the OP, but I just recently got back from a trip to Nicaragua and I traveled from the US with a very sentimental non-collapsible hook. Mine is slightly shorter than standard, but still too long to be fit fully into a backbacking bag ( about a quarter of it would extend fro...

The shots of those two Perentie are fantastic. Such a rare animal to see in the US, and truly one of the most impressive monitors around.

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing

Re: Herping Nicaragua and Corn Island

I spent two weeks in Nicaragua this February, mostly looking for mammals. Our local guide was a fantastic herper with limitless knowledge and awesome field skills. If you're short of time you could always hire him for a day or two. Please PM me for his details. Nicaragua is an excellent country and...

Re: Herping Nicaragua and Corn Island

Thanks for the tips everyone! All of the boas I have found in Belize and Honduras have been at night, though I did flip one under a piece of tin during the day. In my experience C.A. Boas move at night and after a nice rain has passed through but corn island and the boid in question are a different ...

Herping Nicaragua and Corn Island

Hello all, new member here. I am a long time herper, of mostly crots and such in Florida and now Arizona. I kept and bred locale specific boas for many many years, and one of my all time favorite locales was isla del maiz boas. I bred those and loved them dearly, the color changes and range of red h...
