South of the border: A week in southern Sonora
Last August, I was lucky to spend a week with a team of Mexican and American biologists on a ranch which was just purchased by the Turtle Conservancy to protect the newly-described thornscrub tortoise (Gopherus evgoodei). Our goal was to document the flora and fauna with the reserve, which basically...

Re: North American big cats
I've seen a few big cats in Arizona and elsewhere in the United States. Bobcats are common enough in Southeast Arizona and I see a few each year hiking and road cruising. I've seen them in other areas as well. I've seen one Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis). I watched it walk across a clearing and dis...

Re: Herps in habitat - photo thread
You all have some very impressive photos. My grismer-style photography definitely could use some work, but here are a couple from AZ: Gila: https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3708/20299483216_7b99f35925_k.jpg Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum) in habitat by wyman.jules , on Flickr Trimorphodon lambda (So...

Re: Arizona Sistrurus
Good finds! We were there briefly last May, but didn't have the information I do now, or I think we'd have spent some time searching. I think all we saw in that area was some kangaroo rats, several which I caught for return to a zoo in NC. Most of our time was spent between Douglas and the Chiricah...

Awesome stuff! I especially love the salamander diversity (the Aneides is especially cool) and the mole king.

Awesome stuff, love both Bothriechis, the Corytophanes, and Spilotes. And damn, some of those anurans are sweet. Great report, looks like you killed it down there.

Re: Arizona Sistrurus
Very nice! I've herped that area before and I'm glad to hear its still possible to find numbers like that. Love Sisturus! Thank you very much, it's a cool area for sure. It was my first time herping that particular road, and I'm happy it turned out to be so productive. And Sistrurus are sweet. One ...

Arizona Sistrurus
Just wanted to make a short post with a shot of a Sistrurus from last night in Cochise County, Arizona. It was a great night with 33 snakes overall including a hognose and a few of these guys. It was very exciting cruising up this threatened, range-restricted species which in Arizona is confined to ...

Re: Family trip to the pacific northwest
Sweet report! Looks like you found a lot of cool stuff. I was recently up in the Columbia River Gorge (also on a family trip) and found many of the same species, however I had very limited time to search Rhyacotriton habitat and unfortunately dipped on those, how hard were they to find? Looks like a...

Re: A Couple Pics from Az
Nice post, great to see such young enthusiasm! I should note that, although I consider C.nigrescens a full species, the mere fact it renders several species para/polyphyletic is not sufficient to consider it a separate species. It is possible for new species to arise from within populations of one ...

Re: A Couple Pics from Az
I used to think the same thing, but my understanding of evolution, taxonomy, and the definition of a species have changed (about the same time that I came to this thinking, someone else published on the very same topic in Zootaxa). Both logically and by definition, the argument fails. Sexual specie...

Re: A Couple Pics from Az
You seem to have rounded up a few of the harder to find/marginal-US species. Good job! I see you caught to revision of Gastrophryne , although you use both names. The black-tail is just plain Crotalus molossus now, with Chihuahuan Desert [more or less] animals being Crotalus ornatus . I wish you lu...

A Couple Pics from Az
Hey All, I've lurked on this forum for a couple years now, and thought I'd introduce myself and contribute a post of my own. I'm seventeen and based in Tucson, Arizona. I've had my driver's license for about a year, and have been lucky to be able to get out and find some great herps in that time. Wi...

Re: Southeastern Arizona Trip... snakes and toads
Looks like a successful first trip to Az!
You found some good stuff, especially the coral, they're cool snakes.
And your scorpion looks like Hoffmanius spinigerus (formerly Vaejovis spinigerus).
All the best, Jules
