Re: Trip Report: FL, March 2019
Thanks for the input everyone. I agree that the glass lizard looks like O. compressus. You can't tell easily from the photo I posted, but there's a distinct black dorsal stripe as well.
Kfen, a coachwhip is a great find in my book. I still haven't seen the eastern variety.

Trip Report: FL, March 2019
In early March I went to Florida for a week to visit relatives and get a break from the barren winter wasteland of New England. I went with my wife and our three small children (ages 5, 3, and 1), which meant a fair amount of compromise for everybody. While I didn't find any of my top target snake s...

Re: Going the Extra Mile - DOR live birth
Nice work. I had a similar situation a couple years ago, but unfortunately, it was caused by me. I was mowing the lawn and nicked a gravid Northern Ringneck Snake, cutting her almost in half. I noticed movement inside, and finished the job with a pocket knife. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4263/3462...

Re: San Diego April 30-May 3
Took me forever, but I finally put my pics from this trip on Flickr. All were taken in San Diego County. As you can see, lots of lizards. I had a little trouble identifying some and distinguishing various forms, male/female, etc. For more pics, including non-herps, check out my photostream: https://...

Thanks Jeremy. I eventually found the post explaining why the NAFHA threads were merged. Not thrilled about it, but at least the posts are still there.

SoCal Lizard ID
Photographed at dusk in the Anza-Borrego Desert on May 1st, just east of the mountains. I assume it's a juvenile, but I can't find any pics on CA Herps that look like it. P.S. What happened to the separate threads for all the regional NAFHA chapters? https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4217/34343708264_d7...
Re: Lizard ID
I think you're right Jeremy. Somehow I overlooked that one on the CA herps website. Thanks.
Lizard ID
Going through my photos from a recent San Diego trip, and I'm not sure what this lizard is (photographed at Mission Trails). Just a Great Basin Fence Lizard? The scales seem less keeled than others I saw. Brush Lizard? https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4194/34603567965_8f04490a2f_k.jpg DSC_7671edit by P...

Re: San Diego April 30-May 3
Thanks Nate. I sent a text before heading out there--not sure if you got it. It wasn't all bad though, I got a couple new anurans and a bunch of lizards in addition to the few snakes.

Re: San Diego April 30-May 3
I just got back from San Diego. It'll take me a while to sort and edit pics (I'll post them later) but here's a quick summary: lots of lizards, not so many snakes. I was pretty disappointed. I went out in the morning and afternoon/evening on the three days I was there, to a variety of habitats: coas...

Really great finds and shots (I saw them earlier on Flickr). I was just in San Diego and had little with snakes, even when I hopped over to Anza-Borrego.

San Diego April 30-May 3
Hi everyone, My name is Pat and I'll be visiting San Diego for a conference April 30th to May 3rd. I'll be busy during the day, but will have the late afternoon/evening (and maybe an early morning) free for herping. I'm staying close to the airport, and I'd appreciate any general advice for where to...

Re: Spring and Summer in Massachusetts: Narrative + photos
Good eyes, effort, and luck probably still aren't enough for bog turtles in MA. On the other hand, someone found them here (in several spots), or we wouldn't know they exist. I've only tried looking once, but hope to get back out there and look again at some point.

Re: Spring and Summer in Massachusetts: Narrative + photos
Great finds and photos! I'm jealous of how much time you get to spend outdoors. These days, I typically get one Saturday a month, so there's a lot of pressure to make it count.

Re: Trip Summary, June 18-25, 2016
I'm still leaning toward the Chiricahua Leopard Frog. reptilesofaz.org says that the Lowland Leopard Frog usually has no spots on the snout (mine do) and that it's typically brown (mine are green). I know, it's "usually" and "typically." But the site also says that the Chiricahua...

Re: Trip Summary, June 18-25, 2016
Thanks everyone. Really nice finds and really nice pics...so refreshing to see all those cool herps. :thumb: The Leopard frog is intriguing...I've never seen a Chiricauhua with a spot on it's snout. Are you sure of the ID? It could be that populations vary...I don't know... Brian, I'm not positive a...

Trip Summary, June 18-25, 2016
I'm pleased to report that even though this trip coincided with a record heat wave and a full moon, I was able to find some good stuff. I slept 3-4 hours a night the entire week, and hiked later in the day than it was probably smart to do (in Tubac, where I stayed, highs were between 105 and 115 eve...

Re: visiting in June
Thanks Chris. I'm happy to say I survived the heat wave and made it safely back to MA. I even managed to find some herps while I was there, though not quite as many as I hoped. I'll write up a post soon (in a week or two probably, once I can get all my pics edited).

I hear you. I didn't mention that my wife, our two small kids, and my mother-in-law are coming on the trip. My wife is awesome and is letting me do my own thing, on the condition that she gets to pick next year's vacation. Still, I'm not going to ignore them completely, and we'll try to hit some mus...

Re: visiting in June
Thanks for the encouragement guys, haha. The forecast for Tubac (where I'm staying) is telling me 115 on Sunday (day after I arrive), and then holding steady around 110 the rest of the trip. My plan is still to get up well before dawn and head into the mountains, at an elevation where it should be a...

Re: Northeast Member Biographies- Introduce Yourselves!
My name is Patrick, and I grew up in Maine. I've been after herps ever since I flipped a red-backed salamander in my yard at the age of 4. After a stint overseas in the Army (which gave me some great opportunities to find foreign herps), I moved to the Boston area (where I live now) for grad school....

Re: visiting in June
I know, that's the way my schedule worked out. I'm pretty bummed about it, and trying not to get my hopes up too much. I keep telling myself that even in June, the snakes will get hungry and come out now and then... right?
I appreciate the advice though.

visiting in June
Hi everyone, inaugural post on this forum. My name is Pat and I live near Boston. I'm visiting AZ June 18-25 and planning to spend a lot of time in the sky islands (found a little place to stay in Tubac). I know June isn't ideal (nor is the full moon right in the middle of my trip) but I'm going to ...
