Re: Possible Country Records for the US
A recent find by Sam Murray and Aaron Mills should put this controversy to rest. Great find but until they find one "in" California, repeatedly, the controversy still exists. In May 2017, they encountered an adult female rosaliae only 3.6 km S of the USA-Mexico border north-northeast of L...

Mike it’s been a long time indeed, that was a great post looks like life is treating you very well. Those lepidophyma are always a cool find and that shot of you and chip is classic lol. Looks like that male speck did a good job if you make it down to the Salton Sink give me a shout!

Very nice! The “iguana” is actually a leopard lizard Gambelia wislizenii, had it rained recently? I find quite a few diurnal lizards on paved roads at night following summer rains. That was a great score on the Willard’s and twin spot as well

Re: Tips to find sidewinders without cruising
If you drop down to Az or Ca you might get lucky, we still have winders on the move down here by the Salton Sea. I saw several last week along with numerous trackways. Better hurry though it’s cooling off quickly.

Re: Tips to find sidewinders without cruising
Great photos and question. I would add that winders will post themselves just within the shade/drip line of creosote bushes, or other shrubs, and relocate as they are exposed to the sun, just look for craters at the edges of vegetation and follow them around the bush. Found many a morning winder in ...

Re: Intro and question re magnesium chloride
Howdy Jacque Nope just one of us and I must apologize for my veg reference (happened to be reading a tamarisk eradication plan) and while useful to that end, there are better ways and means. There are many factors that dictate MgCl2’s efficacy for soil stabilization but chief among them is dryness s...

Re: Intro and question re magnesium chloride
I’ve never heard of magnesium chloride used for veg control, it’s typically used to de-ice roadways. The chlorine present in magnesium chloride may be the culprit as it can reach toxic levels easily if the MC is applied to frequently or over applied. Just my .02. I wonder if this is a response to th...

Re: Coastal Desert Intergrade Herping
Nice video, those b/w rhinos are known as a “Clarus morph” the other is known as a “lecontei morph”. In the case of the winder, euthanasia would have been the appropriate route, it looked like most of its internal organs had become “external”.

Definitely not a whale shark and molas bask horizontally when at the surface to thermo regulate. I’d say you have a pinniped with 99% certainty.

Neat observation of a Diadophis eating a Chilomeniscus. I’ve heard there are “ringless” ring necks in some parts of AZ but have as yet to find one.

Quite interesting, my only notable opossum observation was a dor I found in corn springs while doing field work about 15 years ago. Have never seen another in the desert.

Change of topic. So what? interesting and I totally agree I don’t want some mangy cat taking the elk I just paid $35k to shoot. I had the same bs in Texas last year with my African lion hunt, damn coyotes harassed it to the point of exhaustion so we brought out the chopper and warfarin and set thin...

Re: Upcoming Tejon Ranch Herping Photo Safari
In 2012, Tejon Ranch agreed to pay $136,500 in fines and restitution for illegally killing at least 11 mountain lions to prevent them from competing for game with high-paying trophy hunters in its hunting concession. The above is just one of their “indiscretions”. Conservation easements funded by pu...

...glad you amended your post lest we steer this chap down ticket road. In CA you should have a fishing license on you while herping or you will likely be cited, worst case,or have a premature end to your hunt. It’s a silly law that, for some reason, remains unchallenged.

Re: trip report Yucatan Peninsula
Nice report! Coba is a great place, my first trip there was 25 years ago and the first snake on that little two track from the coast (at the time) was an 8' Drymarchon melanuras. 5 minutes later it was a coral snake with a recently envenomated Conophis lineatus....

Nice write up Jonathon. The NWR in Coachella encompasses that 19 miles of “optimal” habitat but there is actually about 50 sq miles of blowsand habitat which continues to support uma. I wonder if that development you saw is related to the cannabis industry. There are several large scale operations b...

Google earth is a very useful tool indeed but I am curious about the “poacher and collector” comment. Are they being viewed as the same? Collecting is how many older folks got started with reptiles, which in turn led to understanding about captive husbandry and breeding of many species. 40 years ago...

DV is definitely not a place to get “stuck” especially during the summer lol. Snake was relocated off the road in the direction it was headed and vouchered o...

Hi porter
I’ve worked in DV off and on for the past 30 years so yes I have used most if not all routes into or out of the park at some point. 190 is hit and miss as is most of the area but one can be surprised once in awhile. I vouchered a rosy off the 190 in July so go figure.
