Re: question about "live birth" snakes. help!

Snakes are connected to their yolk sack while in the egg in the area you describe. When snakes hatch, or in this case, are born, sometimes the opening has not fully closed, and the yolk sac has not been completely taken in. This can be due to early hatching/birth, or due to deformities in the hatchl...

So sorry to hear of his sudden passing. He was a great guy, and a hell of a herper. I am thankful to have met him in person. I was supposed to go film his eastern hog nesting sites this summer. I really wish I hadn't put it off for so long. I would have loved to hear his insights while in the field....

Tamara, I would have to look it up again but I believe the longest he tracked one individual was 19 years. Fitch had a wonderful drive for detail, and his style has been a great inspiration to me. I know the person/people who did this either post on this forum, or are friends with someone who does, so I'm hoping they will get a chance to see this. If you know of a place where copperheads den... where you have easy access to a hibernaculum entrance, you can hold the snakes in captivity for the summer, cool them down in fall, and then release them into the den when surface temps are sufficiently low as to prevent the snake from leaving the den....

I've been herping in Eastern Kansas for about 15 years, and I've found about 10 bullsnakes in that time. Contrast that with western Kansas where you can find 10 or more in a day. Unfortunately, construction and changes in the flora (introduced trees) plus lack of fires have made Eastern Kansas unwel...

Take him to the area where they are hunting, and tell him to sit with his camera and wait. I think the evidence points to the opposite, Jim. If a dominant trait is less common (In this case 40% vs 60% for the recessive) it would follow that the selective advantage lies with the banded/blotched morph. There are many common examples of this. The human hand, tail length in cats, etc. What is...

I'm not sure why people are so militant about the use of subspecies. Subspecies names are extremely useful, especially in milksnakes.
