Re: Summer South Africa, a month in review.

Great photos. Especially thankful for the habitat and landscape backgrounds. Great to see a country I'll probably never get to. Thanks.

Re: fire in the Smokies

You can read the federal fire incident reports at: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov. The column headings allow you to sort the reports on several parameters. Clicking on the incident name takes you to a map showing the extent of a given fire. Many of the recent fires are listed as "North Carolina".

Re: Can anyone help with information on snake gaiters?

I see you're from the midwest and just as likely to benefit from your gaiters near Timber dens as in AZ.

I wear them near the dens and can attest that Timbers all to easily show up undetected.

Thanks for the reinforcement for safety afield.

Re: different snake species basking together?

I've only seen two species basking together once. It was early August in central Wisconsin at the rocky rip rap downstream side of a culvert (projecting from a a small dirt dam with a county road atop) about ten feet from shore. A Northern Water Snake was laying atop an Eastern Fox Snake. The NWS, s...

First 2015 Foray, First Ever Bull Snake

The promise of a warm afternoon drew me to a den site. The Wisconsin overnight temp was about 30 and afternoon high 57. I was rewarded with my first ever Wisconsin Bull Snake and a very big adult at that. I've taken to the In Situ ethic and the snake was very cooperative. It's nice to just let them ...

Re: Hiking the Grand Canyon: the Havasupai Indian Reservatio

Our son got lost at night in the Grand Canyon on a Boy Scout trip. His is one of the most harrowing tales I ever want to here. He hiked back to camp after midnight cold and barefoot. Luckily no permanent damage, but we're not sure he learned anything. He still rarely wears a bike helmet in graduate ...

The snake was not touched or bothered in any way and behaved just fine, never moving a muscle. I just stayed far en...

Re: My Junior Paper Is To Include Rattlesnake Roundups

You might contact some of the roundups and ask what benefits they expect the roundup to produce. Mostly I imagine they are fundraisers for local service clubs or fire and police departments that do good deeds in the community. They just haven't thought of a good replacement fundraiser yet. That migh...

Re: Central Wisconsin Fox Snake Relocation Help

I wonder if there are potential den sites close enough to the house so the snakes could simply go to a neighboring den if the house could be snake proofed? If it can't be snake proofed the snakes will never go away because it remains available and must be more attractive than available alternatives....

Re: Box Turtles..... To relocate or not to relocate????????

Perhaps this is a public relations opportunity to gain public awareness of the plight an overlooked species, the box turtle being the closest thing to a "warm fuzzy" reptile for most people. Maybe in this instance box turtles could be the poster child for a conservation statement attractiv...

Re: Snakes in a survival situation

Sam Thayer is my married to my wife's niece. We see him occasionally and I will testify to the long hours and hard work he endures. I would imagine someone would suffer more quickly from dehydration than hunger in the desert environment and wonder if you could address keeping hydrated. Having eaten ...

Big Snapper on log

I walked around a favorite pond at lunch today and discovered a huge snapper on a log. The Painted turtles are adults. I assume it is a female and have seen her before. Please pardon the poor focus, the stupid auto focus kept defaulting on the nearby bushes and I was afraid to move. Indeed she and a...

Re: N. CA First Post

Thanks correcting the lizard's name and for all the comments. Yes, we enjoy the view and the hiking in the N. Sierras. The first lizard we saw was a speedster and all I got was this quick shot, but I do wonder if it is a Whiptail? The long tail gave it every appearance of moving like a snake. http:/...

N. CA First Post

My wife's family has a cabin next at 6,250 feet in the northern CA sierras. They've owned the cabin since 1927 when a group of ranchers and teachers built summer cabins around the privately owned meadow. We go there most years to vacation with her family. We take time to enjoy nature and hike in the...
