All good stuff. I haven't been over to dip that area in awhile but it is usually quite productive. Water levels have fluctuated due to the dam temporarily allowing more water into the St. Johns, which may be the reason for lower numbers. Glad you are getting out and seeing some cool animals. -Jake

A seriously good year, Noah. Dag! You found more stuff in Big Bend in the short couple of days there than most people find in many years. I've seen one alterna and thought I was lucky as hell...not only did you get two, you got a damn hooknose (which is even better, to me).

Great post. Okefenokee has always been one of my favorite places since going there as a kid on a school trip (for us it was exotic being from Maryland).

It wasn't entirely intentional, but I did want to knock of barbouri which was my only lifer ambystoma. I didn't get to Maine for my laterale this year, which was disappointing. Had to many other things I needed to do with not enough vacation time.

They aren't an uncommon sight around Strictly...almost anything can be found around there. T. annularis are also common in various other places. Here's one from a Lee Co. population. They actually darken with age and are usually a pinkish color until they are about 3 inches. Then they turn a brownish ground color with dark spotting along the dorsum. Are you sure you found Necturus? It was a solid black individual? Perhaps you captured a Siren? I guess you would know if it had four legs, but just wondering since I've never seen/heard of a solid black individual from that area.
