I have the same exact thing, and I'm 17 so I wouldn't say it's because you are getting old... I can't read anything or focus on anything in the car. I have a hard time using my phone for very long either. I find the best is to look around. Keep your eyes outside of the car, and don't focus too hard ...

Three.. A Dotted king, A Saddled/yellow-bellied banded king, and a 22 inch ringnecks that eats skinks and dor small snakes.. I just recently found a pair with the same exact colors!! One was a striped, the other was banded... What was up with them? -Chris You'd have to show a picture. What County did you find them? I'm not a fan of carpet as A/C. Carpet adheres too closely to the ground in my opinion and doesn't allow enough space for herps. It doesn't make my job easier pulling carpet inch by inch when I can easily just flip over a large board. Carpet can also become very heavy when it's soaked in mud or wat...

As said earlier, Carlsbad boas are fairly close to the coast. I BELIEVE within 5 miles... (don't quote me on this. Never found one. Just heard a lot on em.) so a mile away? Sure! Why not. I've seen some snakes within a hundred feet of the ocean.

I found a king in the pouring rain last weekend. I normally don't bother for my own sake, but the few times I have tried, under the boards has remained fairly dry and often with snakes. If you don't mind the weather, I think it's worth a shot!

As I understand it, juveniles will move quite a bit to find their own territory, shelter, food sources, etc. So, you are not likely to encounter that particular helleri there again. But once they settle in somewhere, then, like Kent said, they will tend to stay put unless forced to move. Then again...
