Well 8 years later in with new know I have a lot more experience and observations to discuss. I've seen probably a 100 or more nights snakes now. Still only 1 active snake I've ever seen during the day was with Jeremiah and Josh in a canyon many years ago. Most of the surface active night snakes I'v...

Knowing what I know about Richard, the video was not faked. The zonata in Oregon is interesting. Are you sure it wasn't a freshly shed (ie vibrant) valley or Oregon Spotted garter snake (I'm not sure without checking range maps which would be in Hood River, I think they'd be valley garters. The reason I bring this possibility is a few points. First, MANY ver...

Well, you won't see zonata on the Oregon side of the Gorge... Basically look for any park with trails near water. Flip logs, rocks, and other debris. If it's raining and above 50, you should find a LOT of species and in high numbers. Some of the exits off of state route 84 along the Columbia once yo...

IIRC, a few years ago, Lisa and I had a conversation regarding whips in WA and her telemetry study she did in the early 2000s and they rarely cross roads for some reason. DOR could be even rarer than seeing one in the field. The original post says tissue samples from OTHER parts of the species range...

What Brian said. If you took a baja, sierra, and pacific, and threw them all together, you wouldn't be able to dicern a difference, the males all sound the same, and the females of each would go with whatever male (based on the normal selection reasons they use)

Could just be the picture is stretched weird or something, but the last northwestern garter looks like it might be an Oregon garter, Thamnophis atratus hydrophilus. It's eye looks too large compared to the rest of its head for ordinoides, and just the overall shape of its head seems to say aquatic.

Yes Jimi, some of our finds did come from way up there, though mostly lizards.
