Re: Some Winter Herping Around the Bay Area

Thanks Richard! I'll start counting those scales when I'm in the overlap area. I was distinguishing the two by ventral scale coloration, but I'll start counting caudals if that's more reliable. Hubbs: Yes, I will get around to entering them. Even though they are all pretty common species of little c...

Thanks all! Sorry about the N/S Alligator lizard mix up. I use the scientific names more often than the common ones. JAMAUGHN: I looked at the ventrals and saw that they were mostly black rather than only partially black, that's why I called it tenuis. I'm no expert though. How can you tell by color...

Some Winter Herping Around the Bay Area

I moved to Berkeley in August to start my PhD and it's been a ton of fun. The best part, so far, has been the winter herping. As an east coaster it's been awesome to be able to herp basically year round. California is great. These animals were all found in December and January. On a warm day we foun...

Tongs are also great if you don't have two hooks and are dealing with a snake that's too short to tail. Not every snake stays on a hook. In fact I've met relatively few venomous snakes that do.

New Mexico Snake ID Challenge

This one was tough. It was found near Socorro, NM, eating eggs from a fly catcher's nest. These were captured at ~1:50AM and the nest is extremely close to a river. The nest has a diameter of about 6 inches, for scale. Good luck! https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5gdUCzr5u8I/UITVkfTLm3I/AAAAAAAAAJI...
