Phil , another technique you can use is "stacking " layers of plywood .Different species will be attracted to the "layers " just as Chris mentioned for the carpeting .Generally the lower levels will be damp ( depending on rain fall , etc )As the wood ages it will crack /splinter providing even bette...
Not too far from their southern NY population.... That would make NJ the best state for turtles!! interesting ...3 other non-native turtles have established populations in NJ ;Red-Eared , soft shell & Map ."South Eastern NY" is about 25 Mins or less from where this was found ;).Realize the Blanding...
Just keep @ it .Habitat does appear solid . I have a spot I've been going to for about 5 yrs .Each year I usually come up with at least 1 new species of herp @ this same spot .If you're targeting snakes you may want to seek out an area with some artificial cover , which may help . Good Luck.
I have never "baited " . However , From field observations , They are very , very found of pickerel here in NJ . I have seen them emerging from lakes / creeks / ponds with good sized pickerel held in their mouth .

Ryan/ Mike , Thanks for input . Ryan , the state of NJ has listed the King as a "species of special concern " . I'm not aware of a formal study per se .I do know the county where I live , Monmouth ( which is the extreme No edge of range ) kings are very , very rare , Pines are as well. If they still...
Good topic/ thread . Taking it a step further : - Delmarva has a stable / more substantial King snake population .NJ 's seem to be in decline .NJ has the habitat , etc . They were once considered ' common " -Delmarva also has Corns .Probably not common , but they are present . - Ok , soil, topograph...

Good question . A lot more than you might think : -Turtles are the dominant Herp , appear to be in all 5 of the boroughs . Painted , Snapper , RES , maybe 1 or 2 other, possibly more . -There are frogs . I posted about 2 weeks about frogs . In theory , there is a new Leopard frog species in NYC .Gre...

I concur with Kyle 100% . I wear bright colors due to large # of hunters . The hunting season in NJ ( a small state ) is now 9 mos .Sept - End of May .Also , i'm not certain , but many herps ( as i understand it ) see few if any colors , especially snakes ? I usually try to wear @ least 1 article of...
Pete - Good , but short recent article in NY Times . Mentions broad ecological impact , but also mentions the "L" word - Lyme disease. If you read between the lines , will ultimately effect herp populations , especially all rodent- eating snakes . http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/03/nyregion/boom-and-b...
