Re: Aboreal Rattlesnake?
I work in the Wine/Table grape industry as well and It is pretty common to see snakes hiding amongst the vines during harvest. Vineyards seems to bring in quite a few snakes, particularly gophers and rattlers, looking for the water, shade, and food supply that they supply. We see 3-5 snakes a day du...

Great shots and those are some great finds. Could agree more about the sidewinders. They are absolutely gorgeous and to see them in their natural habitat is a blessing I know plenty of herpers from around the world would kill to have. We are lucky here in ca

I live in San Luis obispo county and have been helping there for years, maybe we can go out and do some flipping although the likelihood of finding either of the Aforemntioned species would be a significant discovery (don't worry fun dad I would update the database) but you ARE likely to find lots o...

Very interesting Scientific study!
This new study is not specific to snakes but they are using Copperheads and cottonmouths and are finding that "virgin births" are more common than we believe. Anyways I wont say more cause I'm not doing it justice. Here is the link; let me know what you guys think http://www.msnbc.msn.com/...

We are planning a trip to herp our way from So Cal to AZ sometime in July depending on the weather. Re: Hypo Highway morph :p
Great explanation of the genetics Jim, couldnt have put it better myself :thumb: If you have already taken the snake out of the wild already and intend to breed it know that hypomelanism is a recessive trait so you will not get any "hypos" only hets. You will either have to breed it out wi...

Re: Hypo Highway morph :p
I might be inclined to say that it isnt necessarily a hypo because most strains of hypomelanism in kingsnakes makes them extremely light colored to the point that it is very apparent that it is something beyond a light brown coastal. My guess would be that if anything this is a Newport-Long Beach mo...

yes rattlesnake venom is hemotoxic which causes swelling, necrosis, as well as containing an anticoagulant. Is this what i think it is?! (Melanistic Oreganus)
So this was one of my first finds of the year and I flipped it under some AC in San Luis Obispo County and to me it appears to be a Melanistic Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus Oreganus Oreganus) because it has such a significant amount of black pigmentation, but it could just be a dark phase. ...
