My biggest leap from point and shoot to dslr was learning to shoot in aperture priority, which is what I almost always shoot in. Typically, when doing macro work, I don't want a shallow depth of field (I want as much of the herp in focus as possible), so I use the smallest aperture possible (larger ...
I seriously need to organize my photos. I was wondering what methods everyone is using to organize their herp photos. Do you organize by: date, season, location, species, etc. I have years of photos organized by species, and years organized by trips/outings and I want to organize them all the same w...
First, I will start with the April 17 NAFHA California trip to Tejon Ranch. Hellihooks turned up these two Western Rattlesnakes. What do you all think, helleri or oreganus? http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy209/jasonmintzer/socal/lovers4.jpg http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy209/jasonmintzer/s...

I want a good pair of snakeproof boots for walking in tall grass/brush. Has anyone had any experience with the Rocky Snake Proof boots or any other recommendations? Boot chap combinations? I hate wearing boots, and usually herp in trail runners, but have been nervous with all of the helleri about la...
Thanks Ross and Dan. I was definitely stoked on the Newport, it is the first I have found at that location. We definitely had a good morning, especially considering that it was raining most of the time. 8 Southern Pacifics 2 Kingsnakes 2 Ringnecks 1 Gopher As Bart mentioned, the rain kept us from ta...
Obviously your kids will want a book with pictures, but for me, now my bible is http://www.californiaherps.com/ accessed from my iphone. The main downside is no service, no guide. The best part is being able to listen to different frog/toad mating calls.
I live in Orange County and am heading to Death Valley Sunday March 27-Wed 30th or Thur 31st. I want to knock stephensi off my list, and hopefully get some good wildflower photos. Anyone want to split gas/campsite fees?
My vote is for the tamron 17-50. I have the older non vc version, but I am very pleased with the sharpness. Here are a few pics with the 17-50 on a nikon d80. http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy209/jasonmintzer/Spain%20for%20forum/lacertabilineatawideangle.jpg http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy...
Nice picture . I like the one with the diffuser better. The blown out stick in the foreground doesn't bother me at all. One question, what do you use to hold the diffuser?
So, I recently downloaded the trial version of photomatix, and I am impressed. I will definitely be buying the full version. A few months ago I got the idea from Chrish to try HDR with herps ( I think it was from the thread hyla hdr fun). Today I went out and found a subject. Keep in mind, these pic...
The previous post has got me really wanting a good lizard lens. Right now i have a d80. Would the tamron 180mm macro with a 2X teleconverter be a sharp lizard lens? Is there is a good 2X teleconverter that will work with that lens? Thank you.
I have used the tamron 90mm macro for a years now and am completely happy. It is a very sharp lens. Occasionaly when photographing crotes I wish it was a bit longer, but I can always crop. If I could go back in time, I would still buy the tamron.
