Re: goodbye carl

Carl was a good guy and he will be missed. I spent lots of hours in the field and in the car with him. The first time I met him we found the first burrowing hognose snake together at what became his favorite study site. The last time I saw him he was leaving one of his other favorite spots and he ga...

I believe the gravid females would be sticking around the den areas all summer so if you go to the right spot you still have a chance even if the general population has dispersed.

Images from the Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro

I purchased this lens over the winter to replace my Nikkor 18-70. What drew me to this lens was the slightly wider angle, the close focus at all zoom ranges and the relatively fast aperture. The first thing I noticed when I got it is the weight and build quality. It was way heavier than my Nikkor an...

Gonna be in Virginia Beach area Memorial Day Weekend.

I'll be visiting a friend in VB on May 25th-30th and looking for some info on hiking/herping areas within an hour to 1.5 hour drive. I'm interested in seeing anything, even common stuff for the area. Send me a PM if your more comfortable with that. I'm not a keeper or collector and just take photos....

Not sure about the commonness of the Pasque Flowers in WI but there's a prairie I know about where they cover the ground. I've seen them in a few other places but never in a huge abundance.

Those are some nice bull snakes and timbers! How common are bull snakes in Wisconsin? They are fairly widespread here (central Kansas). I really like the attitude of bull snakes, they seem to put on a good show. Nice post! Bullsnakes are not very common at all, but not necessarily uncommon. I've se...

My spring post. Wisconsin. Bullsnakes and Timbers.

I sure haven't been posting much lately and this will pretty much cover my spring so far. We'll start back in April in the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest. As typical in Wisconsin, the first reptiles out are the Garter Snakes. Here's a Common Garter Snake found at some rocky areas of the state ...
