Not a good month, very dry and hot. But next week should be better. There was another wildfire in Buenos Aires Nat. Grassland, but has been contained. Looking for a much friendlier end of the month for herping.

It did however pass through Sycamore Canyon, so we'll have to see what the damage there is going to be. I'm also hoping it doesn't ...

Fires in s. AZ.

There's probably 4 or 5 significant wildfires burning in AZ right now, but the one I'm most concerned with is the Mule Fire partially in the Pajarito Mountains, west towards Ruby, and north towards the Tumacacoris. The temps are awefully high this weekend and it's very dry. Conditions aren't good fo...

Jeff. Sorry it took so long to get back. I don't ever find ground snakes in my area. That would be a real treat. I'm still looking for a good spot for them. I have "rarely" found an AZ glossy snake in my area, within shouting distance of the Santa Cruz River. Our area is very good for sand...

Steve, I forgot to mention that night snakes, Hypsiglena, are very common in our yard and area, and they are predatory on the small fossorial snakes. The Santa Ritas also supports populations of the Yaqui and Chihuahuan black-heades snakes. I have seen black-headed snakes in the Willcox area too. Th...

Some notes on fossorial snakes in s. AZ.

This is the time of year I start looking for the small fossorials. Last week I found a couple adult blackheaded snakes, Tantilla hobartsmithi, in my front yard. They were in a less than likely place, a pile of white rocks that I was moving to make pathways with in the yard. http://www.naherp.com/vou...

I used to add to the Herp Atlas in MI years ago when I lived there. Maybe the MI folks add records directly this way; but adding to the HERP database is so easy, why not do it this way? Now that I'm retired in AZ, I only get to MI for a couple weeks a year. However, in the last two years I've added ...
