Hard to say, but could be possible...
The image does not allow a decent view of the face, so for me looking at the head and eye...I see something with a blunt face and not

Got to play with one a friend bought...interesting camera and the zoom ability is truly beyond belief, however...without being mounted to a serious tripod most of that zoom capability is wasted.

Your unknown insect is an Acharia sp. Caterpillar (possibly nesea). Accidentally leaning your forearm against one to photograph other things is highly unpleasant!

Sounds like you have some good options going through your mind already. The 70-200 will definitely give you more options. Too bad you are a Canon guy (said with love and a smile) I am a Nikon guy...the only reason I say too bad is I have a Nikon mount Tokina 100mm macro I would part with lol! Macro ...

For a trip such as this I would look into renting a lens...since you have canon...the 300f4l might be something to look into for rental of the trip. It is a fast lens that would allow you to reach out and capture images from a distance!

There has been a large breeding population in Cades Cove TN for at least 8 years that I know of.... I assume introduced as the bubble that exists devoid of them (so far) all the way around.

Yes Tonia, it was clipped in the head by a car. Although enucleated, I do believe it survived the incident, as it was fiesty and walking well as it left the road way while I was photographing it... It was the worst part of the evening.

So this month has allowed me some really neat opportunities while walking washes. Nailing lighting in the dark is always a challenge and I have striven to achieve even lighting and decent exposure. Loved the chuck and lutosus shots. Any chnace that the predation on the young torts were the result of packrats or squirrels directly? I have seen squirrels do a lot of damge, and have had a few serious discussions with some large scale tortoise breeders on squirrel predation on their young tortoise...

Many residents of Wyoming refer to the Midget Faded Rattlesnakes as "Pygmy" rattlers....
