2016 Year in Review
It's the end of the year again, and what a year it's been. I relocated to Florida to work as part of a research team working in south Florida. This will be photo heavy, and mostly cover Florida. https://c3.staticflickr.com/2/1463/24130259866_706a948d60_c.jpg Diamondback Habitat by Nick Scobel , on F...

Some early risers were out last night in southern Michigan. Pools were mostly thawed, small numbers of lats and some tigers were in pools. Lats were also active on roads, despite it being dry after dark. If we get rain next week, things should be really good.

Living as far north as I do, my state doesn't have much in terms of rattlesnake diversity. We have one species, but it is a species which is in bad shape across its range with the exception of here and Ontario. And even so, they still face threats here such as habitat loss and development, road mort...

Hi Nick. I also initially thought the 4-toed was a blue spotted, but I verified that both it's front and hind legs had only 4 toes. Went out to check a handful of pools last night in southeast Michigan and had 11 Eastern Tiger Salamanders and a handful of unisexual Ambystoma as well. Never this year. Going to still be digging out of the snow for months. That being said a spotted salamander was moving over snow in Jan, so who knows these days. I've had tigers as early as March 2nd here in Michigan, and as late as the first week of April. Even if temperatures warm up, there is a lot of snow and ice that needs to melt. This snake looks a lot more like a obsoleta/vulpina hybrid to me. The dark coloration is certainly indicative of a black rat, but the head shape, post ocular stripes, and blotches on the back all scream fox snake. Just my $0.02.
