Re: The year of exploration. 2018 review.

Awesome coachwhip! I grew up in the Salinas area. Never saw a coachwhip on the West side of the valley, but a few years ago I did see one on a road on the east side. I was blown away to see a bright red snake on ths road. Of course it jetted off into a pasture. I followed and found it resting motion...

Very nice. I have been to Taiwan a couple of times. The Russells proved to be the hardest of the larger venomous snakes to find. We did find a 4ft DOR Russells in the SW part of the island, but no live ones. We also never saw a coral. So much herp diversity there.

Very nice pics. That's cool that you found the toads. I was just in AZ as well. Snakes were a bit harder to come by than in the past on the roads. Around Phoenix, it was too hot for much movement. Snakes were moving at higher elevations in the region, however. In SE AZ, the amount of rain and associ...

Congrats on an exceptional specimen. That area can produce some very interesting mountain king snakes. A subset of the population will have that overall reduced black pattern/white head phenotype. Similar animals are not typically found anywhere else in their range (Washington to Baja). Most of the ...

Here in NC, I've seen a photo of a copperhead eating a corn snake (not another viper). I've also seen a couple of photos of black racers eating copperheads, and of course eastern kingsnakes eating various snake species. I use this info, whenever possible, to deter people from killing snakes indiscri...

I think it's a Regal ringneck eating a ground snake. The larger ringneck are notorious snake-eaters. In AZ, ringnecks can occur in semi-arid and even arid areas at higher elevations, but they are very unlikely to occur in the same habitat as banded sand snakes or shovel nosed snakes. The small amoun...

October in the Mojave will be rough; it's way too dry. I would not go there then. April-June would give you the best results for snakes and most other reptiles. If you want to see Latrodectus spiders, they can be found all over coastal CA at lower elevations in trash piles, on road cuts, in utility ...

October can be tough. You may have better luck when the winter rains start, but you will be unlikely to find the snakes you mentioned until Spring. August is not a great time to cruise the CA deserts. It is usually very hot and very dry and many animals are taking cover deep underground. The exception would be if there has been recent monsoonal rain, which tends to hit the higher elevations in the East Mojave at times. AZ would be much better. FH
