So, has anyone gotten all fourteen Ca garters? If not, how many are you missing from the list? I'm trying to complete the list by next summer...I knocked two off my list, this year. The gigas and the vagrans. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can head up and get that ordinoides and hydrophilus. That...

The one I caught last year, with a quick hand spread measurement, was just over three feet. Around 38 inches. Not an accurate measurement at all, though. This one looks huge, Owen!

While I'm not a fan of killing animals, when I see a baby SF garter and then look thirty yards away and see two massive, adult bullfrogs, I would not lose a wink over dispatching them (frogs).

Poison oak eats poison ivy for breakfast!...While hot water feels good, don't do that until you've washed with ice cold water. Cold water will close your pores and help prevent the oils from spreading. After you've washed the oils off then hot water does feel great. As others have said, dishsoaps ar...

I've never thought about the blue in lings and cabs being a dietary thing. I've certainly caught a ton of both, blue and not blue. You never know, it could be a predatory chain type of thing...Kelp crab washes up, stuff feeds on crab, frogs feed on stuff, snakes feed on frogs. I doubt if it is relat...

I'm really digging reading everyones story. I enjoy hearing how people became interested in herping, as well as stories of the catch/cruise/find/adventure. Like many others, I was 5 or 6. Walking around a small lake in Oakland, CA, looking for crawdads. I saw a huge snake, somehow knew it was a goph...

Maybe your SM Co. infernalis are just checkered SFs? This one has a bit of both checks and stripes. I've seen specimens that were even more checked. Aren't SFs basically a striped morph of infernalis anyways? Maybe someone will throw up a pic of a fully checked SF... Owen, I sure dig those south bay...
