I just took a look in NAHERP and interesting enough I didn't see any records for either Newts or Arboreals in Amador Co., but you are right the area looks good for both. On the bright side, winter herping there will be better than in Reno.

Brian, I better clarify that one. Some of that depends upon the species, and many need some canopy for shading, others surprisingly little, but most (at least around here) are much more prevalent when there is less than an 80% canopy. I think that probably a better way to put it would be to look for...

What Field Harper said plus you can throw rock flipping into the mix. Avoid Eucalyptus groves, you will probably only get Slender Salamanders under these. In the canyons or ravines concentrate on areas with 80% canopy or less, less is better.

If you have humidity data that you wish to enter, just enter in the digits. Leave the percent symbol off and you should be able to enter your data.

In addition to what the others said I would recommend concentrating your efforts near water ways, especially small streams. It's not only good for birds it's about the only place to see amphibians that time of year. Newts and frogs are pretty easy to find and bring along a small powerful flashlight....
