Hey guys, My name is William and I recently moved from CO out to eastern KY and I am wondering if there are any of you all located around this area? Re: Milksnake Hibernaculum

Thanks Scott! I have never had much of a problem locating the ones in northern Colorado, but SE Colorado can be a trick. You pretty much have to cruise them at night and it appears to be random when they do show up. Man we gotta get together, maybe in the spring?

I guess the person that just posted didn't read that the snakes scattered. Trust me I would have loved to have gotten that in situ shot!

I also want to add that milk snakes feel good in the hand, and my touching them will have no impact on their millions of years worth of adaptation skills. :)

Re: Milksnake Hibernaculum

Cole the soil was sandy and it was located next to a dry river valley on a south facing slope. The habitat was shortgrass prairie in sandhills. Like I said the rodent burrow was located in the middle of a dead yucca, and of course the hole probably went much deeper into the ground. The frost depth i...

Re: Milksnake Hibernaculum

Hey thanks guys! It is unusual to find them this way but gentilis are fairly cold tolerant. The days before were very warm so it sparked some activity, and it's not too unusual for snakes to sit outside of their dens for a couple weeks before hibernation.

Bryan send me a PM about that if you like.

A lot of us were never given spots by anyone, we had to go out and look for the spots. We are kinda careful about just giving spots away as some people over collect or do not put rocks or logs back in their original position. Denver has some really good spots to herp, and if you get close to a river...

I said decent because some almost get fire engine red around here. Several counties in Colorado have reddish colored ones that rival the same subspecies in Brewster, Terrel, and Val Verde counties in Texas.

I was down in SE Colorado yesterday doing some scouting for the spring, and I must say its very dry. Lets keep our fingers crossed for some moisture or it could be a weird spring! Wow you sure get out early. I don't like to get out this early as it can have a negative impact on flipping in the spring. When you flip rocks they almost never return to their exact fit with the ground, and as a result loose moisture. Most snakes in this region like moisture under rocks. Just somet...
