Re: SC in Sept...
The first pic of Anuroctonus you linked doesnt look like a typical Anuroctonus sp. as the chelae are much more smooth than your typical A. pococki or A. phaiodactylus. Anuroctonus chelae are similar to U. mordax in sculpture. Either way, U. mordax do not have blonde chelae. They are almost always mi...

Re: SC in Sept...
In regards to the Uroctonus mordax. If you look at the Chela and Telson you will notice that they are somewhat of a straw yellow color and not a deep chocolate brown to black indicating that it is most likely not Uroctonus mordax but more likely a species of either Vaejovidae or Anuroctonus. Also, i...

Re: repost; Reds in NorCal DUW
Awesome thread! There is not enough NorCal stuff on here. I think you guys are the first people I've seen ballsy enough to grab a bat, hahaha. The spider is probably a Titiotus species (family Tengellidae), and your scorp is Uroctonus mordax (family Vaejovidae). Both are harmless. My bad. My Titiot...

Well that settles it then. Monklet nailed it. You should have seen alot of Red Penstemon out there too. That's what's in the pic below. Costa's feed exclusively on this beautiful plant in the low desert and foothills thereof. Again not my pic. Belongs to kimste.com http://www.kimste.com/images/Red.J...

Re: Memorial Day weekend in the low desert
Are you 100% on the Black-chinned diagnosis Robert? Well truth be told the only way to correctly identify between the female Black-chinned and Costa's is to observe a male as there aren't any distinguishing features between the females of both species. Either way it turns we are both pretty close :...

Re: repost; Reds in NorCal DUW
Here goes, your spider is a Ctenus sp. and your scorpion is either a light morph Uroctonus mordax or a Anuroctonus sp. It's difficult to get to the bottom of the ID for your scorp without having one in hand to observe closely.

Re: Memorial Day weekend in the low desert
Thanks much. The quail was at about 1000' elevation in Palm Canyon...that would still be the coastal/mountain California quail? I saw tons of quail everywhere I went, so I'm sure I saw both species...should have taken more pictures. It is still most definately a California Quail. The two species ha...

Re: Memorial Day weekend in the low desert
that quail would be a Gamblers quail. Mike - If you look at that Quail you will see that it doesn't have a black patch on the chest/belly and it also doesn't have a brown blotch on the wing sides. Therefore, it is a California Quail (Callipepla californica). You were close though! :D Another ID for...

Your welcome, glad I could help. I would have an easier time finding a Gaboon in FL than correcty narrowing down the I'd on that Pinacate Beetle (Darkling Beetle, Clown Beetle, Stink Beetle). Ironclads are cool little guys. I find it funny how they play dead when you handle them. Also, you didn't se...

Great post!! Many of the photos won't load for me however I can identify your last two beetles. Hey Cody,
That sure was a fun trip! You have half the credit with the boa you did help uncover it as it tried to shoot down the hole. Too bad we didn't find any Zonata but that's because Señor Hubbs wasn't with us . Hopefully we will get back out there soon!
