Re: Wide angle lenses for crop sensor nikon.
I read it and loved the review...but I was looking for some possible alternatives. I've heard good things about the tokina 11-16mm but the ability to get just a little bit closer seems worth it (maybe, it's why I am asking after all).

Wide angle lenses for crop sensor nikon.
I am on the market for a wide angle lens. I love what I have seen out of the Laowa 15mm but all manual seems like to much of a mountain to climb.
Any suggestions on the prose and cons of wide angle lenses for her photography?

Re: Sensitive Wildlife Habitat Area - violated?
Sorry to hear about your retirement from field herping. While not ideal, it could be way way worse. Ultimately I don't dount that giant garters can survive in degraded habitat but they have to have that habitat. If you want to have a petition to get these rules actually enforced I would be happy to ...

Re: Sad
Back in 2012/2013 Clemson University student Nathan Weaver was conducting a study on how many people were targeting box turtles while driving. In short, he found that 2% of drivers are dicks. It's one thing to kill a rattlesnake out of fear, it's another thing to kill a non-venomous snake out of ign...

Re: 2016 Tejon Ranch - May 28 Trip Cancelled
Let me start by saying
I'm always interested (assuming I am available) and you guys have way higher standards of what is thought of a successful trip. I caught a gopher snake and, after a massive amount of photo editing, got a good pronghorn photo. What more could you want in life?

Re: Mangrove Snakes in CA?
I am hoping someone can find a link but I will not be the one that looks for it and all of this comes from memory. California's venomous regs ban by family and not simply venemous as a whole. Ownership of colubrids is permitted with the exception of boomslangs and twigsnakes. Thus, I don't imagine t...

And, the only reason I sometimes brag about DB numbers is to motivate others to catch the fever and enter more data. Most humans are competitive in nature, so I think the contests help, but I actually have my own goals and agenda for entering data. I'm trying to fill my google earth map with vouche...
Re: Lenses
I am of the least experience DSLR users in the world but I wanted to throw this out there in the prime vs. zoom debate. While I am sure there are exceptions to this, herp photography is one of the few forms of wildlife photography where there is not much emphasis placed on action shots and where you...

I've decided I want to play. From talking with many a graduate student and discussions at the Flat-tailed horned lizard workshop I am currently under the belief that Phrynasoma are incredibly sensitive to being moved around. While I understand that the lizards' locations are recorded and they are pl...

Re: Herp research and jobs
As a biostitute I've heard this term in reference to work with consulting companies, along with some other, less flattering terms. I don't really like it. I feel like its demeaning to the work you do. These are important jobs and if you aren't doing them someone else will. Possibly with less skill ...

The city has decided that is easier to kill harmless water snakes than teaching people they are harmless.
That makes my blood more than boil and it does not sound like anyone involved has the slightest idea what they are doing.

Re: Herp research and jobs
I had suggested having a jobs forum, but nobody (myself included) wanted to moderate. There are other job forums around though. I would guess the people seriously interested in these sorts of jobs would work to get on the same lists you are on so they have their inbox filling up with openings too. ...

While I've never seen it. Timber Rattlesnakes have been known to get 30 ft. off the ground. The little ones seem to due it to get cicadas. The little ones in Cali. might be doing it for the same reason.

For the record I am just going to post everything here as I have no idea how to ID most of the critters. Sea kraits, Tokay geckos, marine toads, and pythons are an exception of course.

Visiting Bohol and Quirino in the Philippines
So I am going to be traveling to the Philippines in a month and am trying to find places to go herping in Quirino and Bohol. Right now I am planning on going to the tarsier sanctuary, butterfly sanctuary, danoa adventure park, and the man made forest in Bohol). That being said, while I understand th...
