moving to Dinosaur NM
Hey everyone. I will be living at Dinosaur National Monument starting in May. I'm a wildland firefighter and pretty stoked to be working for the NPS at such a cool geological feature. I'm from the east so the high desert is new to me for herping. I'll be out hiking and photographing Moffat Co. and t...

Re: thoughts on the AF MICRO NIKKOR 105mm 1:2.8 D Macro Lens
Thanks a ton for the feedback! Plus I heard that with the 60 sometimes you have to get so close when shooting macro that it limits your light, another reason why I thought the 105 was a better idea. If you're actually shooting macro and don't want just a sharp portrait lens, you're going to need so...

Thanks a ton for the feedback! "I can use it to get nice shots of crotes from just beyond the strike zone." This what I was mainly why I went with the 105 rather than 60. I'm glad you said this. Also hummingbirds are something I really want to get into, as a friend of mine really loves the...

Awesome! Kevin, thats a really creative approach to getting images...I like it! Thanks for taking the ...

thoughts on the AF MICRO NIKKOR 105mm 1:2.8 D Macro Lens
I'm finally getting a macro lens... the AF MICRO NIKKOR 105mm 1:2.8 D. I found it for a steal in perfect condition and I know it's, optically, a great piece of glass. Only problem is I have a D5000 so I will be limited to manual focus until I get a body with a built in motor. I don't mind this as I ...

Also, it has occurred to me that it's a possibility I will not have much free time to just go exploring around looking for specific herps I want to see. I really need to start developing knowledge of specific habitat and behaviors. Any suggestions for a good quality field guide(s) for California?

DO NOT BUY THOSE DUMB TOE SHOES. Do your self a favor and buy a nice pair of Vasque, Sportiva, or Scarpa boots. They will surely outlast the one's you currently have.

Re: Video Request - Wood turtle stomping for worms
Turkey do a "stomp scratch" type thing but I am not sure if it is the same intention as the wood turtles attracting worms. Turkeys will stomp and scratch and peck at every rotting log and loamy/soft area, but it seems like they are just actively foraging by loosening rotting wood and leaves.

Impressive Tiger! And nothing like some fall Gray Treefrogs. You are great at roadcruising, I don't seem to have the eyes trained well enough for spotting stream salamanders while cruising. I am afraid I'll be doing more damage than good.

That's a great post. I was digging that Black Hognose. But I dug that Wood Turtle even more. It was nice seeing all those Box Turtles too. I agree with the comment on the "bottled milk." That snake doesn't look right - its head shape and pattern isn't typical of an Eastern Milk. And to go...
