It was a phenomenal camera in it's day. I would think the D7000 would produce the same image quality though, with better ISO capabilties, at more megapixels and weight much less. The D2Xs probably has a faster FPS, which isn't huge for herps. It doesn't have an on camera flash and it's probably hard...

You have come a long way in few short tries. You are also being a great sport with all the constructive criticism. Salamanders can be frustratingly difficult to photograph, but extremely rewarding when everything works out. One last piece that hasn't been mentioned. Keep a cup or bag of water nearby...

Cool stuff. I live in Oakland Co so spend a decent amount of time herping this area. Every chance I get I head north for woods and rivers though. I grew up here and in Akron Ohio, so am pretty familiar with herping that area as well. I always love to see stuff from these two states.
