Re: A few from Costa Rica

Is that chick in the 7th-last picture hot?

I really like that basilisk and the unidentified anole shot right below it. Costa Rica is a country I've dreamed of visiting for years. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Galapagos and Ecuador Cloud Forest

Wonderful! Beautiful photos, too! I won't complain if you add more bird photos; it's always been a dream to visit Ecuador's cloud forests for birding. I think there may be a couple misidentifications. The first bird does not strike me as a Brown Violet-ear. I am unsure of the identification myself, ...

A few of mine, I've posted these before, but not since the crash: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2679/4060099718_86b4e58bd3_z.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2656/4159864238_190f607757_z.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2616/4060092326_598003bdd4_z.jpg These three photos are all FANTASTIC. Re: Editing Ugly Flashes

I think Kevin hit it right on the head. If available, I might be tempted to use plastic from a gallon jug of milk instead of the toilet paper...seems more durable. And I was greatly impressed when I switched over to RAW format over a year ago. It's worth the extra hassle of downloading a plug-in and...

Re: Randoms of the last couple years

Your unidentified bird is a species of sandpiper. Sorry I can't really help much further. And your Scarlet is likely a Summer.

Nice to see herpers enjoying other wildlife while out and about.

Re: October-November, Ohio (warning: Not only herps)

Glad you guys enjoyed the caterpillar and wood duck shots. David-- I don't think I've found an ugly Eastern Plains yet. Most of my individuals have been small(ish) so perhaps that's why they're pretty nicely marked. However, a large DOR specimen I found last month looked like it would have been an a...

Re: Editing Software Suggestions/Opinions

I use Photoshop CS4....I bought a copy for $150 off ebay (Windows version). I also have Elements. If you had a Windows, I'd let you install it on your computer for free. At any rate, you can probably buy CS4 off ebay or craigslist for a Mac for <$300. I do not have any experience with Lightroom or G...

Herp resources for Puerto Rico?

I have been invited to a wedding in early April to Fajardo, Puerto Rico. I doubt I'll go, but nonetheless I was curious what books or online sites are recommended for the herps of Puerto Rico. I did find "Los anfibios y reptiles de Puerto Rico" by Juan A Rivero (1998, 510 pages, in Spanish and Engli...

That Least Flycatcher looks more like a Yellow-rumped Warbler...the first Yellow Warbler shots look like fall Blackpoll Warblers...the last Yellow Warbler shot looks like a Pine Warbler. And that Fox Sparrow appears to be a Song Sparrow.

Re: October-November, Ohio (warning: Not only herps)

Justin--Yes, it was awesome being able to take ten steps outside the house and be able to watch the lives of Tobacco Hornworms over a few-week span. Matt--Thanks for the comment on the Wood Duck. I actually got lucky this spring with a vagrant Purple Gallinule, so perhaps America's two most beautifu...

October-November, Ohio (warning: Not only herps)

Having not got out as much as I would have liked July-September, I desperately tried to make up for lost time before things got too cold. I had some great days and some "should've stayed home" days, but that's the way it goes! I started October off by hitting the southern end of the state for (get t...

Nice post, Andy. Too bad you didn't get out more this year, but if it makes you feel better I didn't leave the state this year at all for any reason :( Love that racer shot, really cool. And congrats on that Buckeye Green Salamander. I'm jealous of most of those southern Ohio species...hoping to get...

Re: Lens Suggestions

Marisa--- Image Stabilization is nice, but don't think you cannot get good images consistently without. I take it you have an APS-C Canon, so you're looking at 1.6x crop factor multiplied by 400mm focal length = 640mm. Therefore, handheld ideally you'd want about a 1/640th or faster shutter speed fo...

Re: Lens Suggestions

Marisa--sure thing. I like things to get started in early spring with Ambystoma and Ribbons in March. And yes, I slaughtered you-know-where last month. Almost pooped my pants! If $1000 is your maximum amount (and I'm going to push you towards that!) then I would definitely take a look at the Canon 4...

Re: Lens Suggestions

Any idea as to what price range you are looking at? What camera are you currently using (i.e. Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc)? Prime telephotos and telephoto zooms run from a couple hundred bucks to over $10,000  I've had experience with several lenses, mostly for birds. Answer the above questions and...

Re: Canon T2i?

Canon all the way. The lenses are awesome, secondhand stuff (lenses, flashes, etc) are everywhere online at great prices...I can go on. Remember, you're buying into a complete system with a DSLR. As far as which camera to get, for about the same price you could probably get a Canon 50D. Better in ju...
