Re: Royal Tree Snake (Gonyophis margaritata)

Oh man, that is indeed the holy grail of Bornean snakes. So may times I day-dreamed about how it would be to find it, but I never did. Amazing. And indeed it's sick that it is found by those who are not able to value it.

Rough-necked monitor lizard

One day I walked through the rainforest of Sarawak when I suddenly saw a large lizard digging in the ground next to a huge tree. I had seen hundreds of Varanus salvator and many Varanus bengalensis but this was something different. I kneeled down approximately 2 meters from the lizard. It did not no...

cobra behind toilet

Another old anecdote. We were staying at Damai Beach Resort, Santubong, Sarawak. One morning while we were having coffee, we receive a call from the reception: a snake had been seen by cleaning personel in the public toilets near the lobby. We took the snake hook and snake bag and went there. We ent...

And I love that mimicry-example. That Oligodon octolineatus is so different from Bornean specimens.

Re: King cobra anecdote

Here's a last picture of that specimen taken when it re-appeared the next day. It's a bad picture but still.... It examined its surroundings for 15 minutes in this position before it fully emerged. Imagine how I felt when it looked upwards to me several times.... http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: King cobra anecdote

Glad you guys like this anecdote. What does make me somewhat sad is that (I'm 42 now) I will probably never see such a majestic animal again..... Indeed, King cobra's do come across as above average intelligent. There's something about their exprssion and behaviour that gives you that feeling. When ...

King cobra anecdote

This is an old story which I nevertheless wanted to share with those of you who like King cobra's. As a snake lover obviously I had always wanted to find a King cobra. I started traveling to Thailand and Malaysia but soon found out how difficult it is to find such a major predator. In Kenong Rimba s...

Re: Help with two Borneo snake IDs please

No idea what calamaria species it is, I have never seen it. (By the way, I can not exclude the possbility that it is a Pseudorabdion) Without morphological data, I think it's next to impossible to identify it. I guess this is still the most authoritative work on the genus: INGER, R.E & H. MARX, 1965...

Re: Records of Ptyas carinata in Borneo???

I caught an adult P. carinatus on the Santubong Peninsula, Sarawak, two years ago. Will post a picture later on. It was sleeping 5 meters high up in bushes at night in the primary forest. I suspect that it indeed occurs in low densities on Borneo.

Re: The worst thing thats happend to you while herping

I have had such fun reading these amazing experiences (I'm new on this forum). I had a leech bite on my ankle in Borneo. When I walked through a muddy rviver bank to catch a Boiga dendrophila, a hookworm must have entered the wound. It started digging tunnels beneath my skin, I've never had such a t...

Re: Borneo december 2013

I have been to the Santubong Peninsula many times. It's near Kuching (nice city!), there's a nice resort (Damai Beach Resort). Behind the resort there are some nice trails (several kilometers) which you can easily walk on at night. I found 34 snake species (but I spent a lot of time there)

Re: Oligodon experts needed

Hi, these are definitely O. purpurascnes (brown form). I kept this species for a long time and did some scientific research on colour pattern dimorphism in this species. All the best, Johan. I have some publications if you wish
