Re: Camping suggestion for the Everglades

It occurred to me that another decent campground is at Collier-Seminole State Park. This is out to the west of ENP on US 41, but it is a big campground with more amenities than in the National Park. There are some interesting places to visit, like the Big Cypress preserve and some good wildlife habi...

Re: Camping suggestion for the Everglades

I've camped frequently at Flamingo at the very southern part of Everglades NP. I don't think there were hot showers, but its not too bad a camping area as long as you're not too picky. It used to be that you could count on American Croc at the marina near Flamingo, but its been a few years for me......

Re: Cleaning Up Frog Call Recordings with Audacity

Thanks for posting this! We're in the second year of a middle school science program in which we are having students collect frog and toad sounds from their backyards and school yards. We are also using Wildlife Acoustics SM2 automated recording systems to capture sounds throughout the night (usuall...

Re: strangest thing you ever caught

I caught a barred owl on a hula popper one evening in upstate New York. I am still not sure who was more surprised, me or the owl! I watched the owl drop out of a tree and snag the lure and take off across the lake. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! Luckily it eventually dropped the lure after t...

Here are a couple more from that trip. I would recommend checking out the region, we did pretty well without any local information, just poking around in likely looking habitat. I would like to get back out there again. https://sites.google.com/site/calvertfrogloggerfiles/tompix/fourthtimber2.jpg ht...

Re: RFI Oregon herping

Jonathan,
Thanks for the info. We'll mostly be using Portland as our jumping off point to those other spots. I will have more time to poke around when we get to the high desert area and the Cascades. I appreciate your response to my RFI!

Re: Additioanal pines pix from June 10-11 2912 (Burlington C

Well, we went to the pines to look for pines....but had to take what we could get! 8-) There really wasn't much moving around, other than biting flies. Haven't herped Burlington Co. in the fall, but might try it this year just to change things up a bit. Have pretty gotten skunked on our last two out...

Re: Student project in Calvert County Maryland

It's been a fun project for me and especially gratifying to hear kids calling out frog ids by ear. This is a part of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) initiative which is a big push in education right now. Hoping to ramp it up more next year. Thanks for the good words!

RFI Oregon herping

Hey NW Herpers, I'm heading to Oregon in a couple of weeks for a family vacation. We are planning on visiting Portland, Crater Lake area and Sun River. Any ideas on what might be around in late July/early August? I'll probably try some hiking about and maybe a little road cruising. I'd be psyched to...

some pix from the PA Wilds (Clinton Co)

I took a trip last June to the PA Wilds. Here are a few pictures from that trip. I need to process a few more pictures and will try to upload some additional pix later. https://sites.google.com/site/calvertfrogloggerfiles/tompix/fifthtimber.jpg?attredirects=0 https://sites.google.com/site/calvertfro...

Student project in Calvert County Maryland

I'm an environmental science teacher in southern Maryland and we recently developed a science unit for our seventh grade students. The project connects to the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas project. In the classroom, students learn about the global decline of reptile and amphibian populations ...

Late post trip to the Pines

Took a trip to the south Jersey last month. Pretty slow as expected but always nice to get out among the pines. A couple of critters were observed. https://sites.google.com/site/calvertfrogloggerfiles/klpfiles/box1.jpg https://sites.google.com/site/calvertfrogloggerfiles/klpfiles/brown5.jpg https://...

Hi Folks, My name is Tom Harten, originally from Rockland County, NY but now in southern Maryland. I teach environmental education for a MD school system, so I get to combine my natural history interests with my profession on a daily basis. At the moment we have a lot of students working on the Mary...

I tried uploading some pix with my last post but I don't seem to be able to get the file attachment function to work. Is it disabled? I saw a message about a "board attachment quota" being reached. Thanks!

Clinton County PA herping (update from June 2011)

Hello, I'm new to the list but find the posts that I've read to be quite interesting. Some friends and I did some herping in Clinton County, PA last week. Beautiful country and the herps did not disappoint. I live in southern Maryland and this was my first visit to that region. We had nice sightings...
