Re: Are pinkies really fatty? Nutritional analysis of...

Part of the problem is the time and animal required to do a real study. Mostly we wind up with collections of anecdotes, and while I know that doesn't equal "data" in the sense that a study would use, I'm OK winnowing through it to gather my information. Like there's not real study on the captive hu...

Re: Are pinkies really fatty? Nutritional analysis of...

Exactly--herpetoculture is fairly new as far as human endeavors go I guess. I mean, it seems like a post 1940 phenomena, but there's still a good 60-70 years experience to build on. And honestly, given the state of herp keeping (even in zoos) prior to the 1950s, look how far we've come! It's pretty ...

If I'm breeding something like grey bands, would I hold back the ones that were easy to get on pinks, or the ones that stuck on lizards forever? I know *my* answer and I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that, over 10-20 years, you might notice a change in how easy babies are to start...

Re: And now rodents vs day old chicks

I use day old chicks pretty substantially--I don't feed them exclusively, but 50% or more of the time for my kings and texas rats and chinese king rats (once big enough). One weird thing I've noticed is that it takes a much larger snake to eat a chick than a rat of the same weight. I guess the body ...

We could expand on our knowledge of husbandry of many animals if vets would investigate further rather than writing deaths off as fatty liver disease. QFMT. I'm inclined to agree with that statement. When was it pyson? Until the late 90s/early 00's, I don't think monitor husbandry was really all that hot. I'ts only around then that people started getting them to actually breed and live longer lives--mostly because people started to understand both temps and hydration with them IMO.

My suspicion is that there's a build up of fluid in the eye, resulting from trauma...but that's a barely educated guess. It might be best to have a vet look and possibly drain it or remove the eye (depending on damage).
