Its not a helleri, and helleri are more variable than you might think.

Something I've pondered over the years in these types of discussions is one's sensitivity to the venom. I have to think that like in bee stings one person may be more sensitive to rattlesnake venom than another person and would require more aggressive treatment. Your thoughts?

I found out early on when taking pics of boa's with a flash it's best to be at an angle and not directly over the top of it.

A boa with of a dorsal stripe that defined not to mention wide and straight would also be nearly as dark laterally. Not to mention it looks black. A gopher in the blue out cruising would probably look grey too. I would also expect to see more shine if it were a boa. My opinion is that it's a gophers...

Looks to be Myotis lucifugus or maybe more commonly know as the Little Brown Bat. I See them from time to time here in CA.

I've seen just about all the land mammals there is in CA I suppose except for porcupine and fisher. I would have to do a good scan of the list to be certain. Is there anything else obscure like the porcupine that might be more of a challenge to come across? Pine Marten ( Martes americana ) Side not...

The bokeh on the racer was superb, more snake in focus than just the head. Awesome shots all around.
