I've seen the twisted tail hissing Scutes in South Brewster and North Presidio Counties (about 100 miles apart). The tail thing is really weird. Almost like a deformation. It is even twisted/coiled as they crawl. I've never heard one with a twisted tail rattle effectively. Perhaps they are unable .....

That does sound like a very serious problem. A massive native turtle certainly does not belong in a fenced pond full of non-native fish and foul.

My suggestion: Remove the fence. Remove the non-native fish. Feed the non-native foul to the turtle. Problem solved.

In Texas, it isn't illegal to turn them loose. Any chance that we could make it illegal? Surely TPWD could lobby for a basic against the wild release of any captive animal. Whenever someone freaks out about snake bites, I ask if they've ever been scratched by a cat. A cat scratch is far more serious (and more painful) than a non-venomous snake bite.
