man. Compared to ya'll mine is lame.
I've got a 13+ year old boa and a 10+ year old red ear slider...that's what I'm proud of. Maintaining them and caring for them and allowing to live a (so far) decently long life. I've never bred anything really rare or kept anything really off the beaten path.

Or because you'd expect to be treated like a suspect and hassled. I'd be leery of reporting something like that simply because
A: I doubt very much they'll ever find the perpetrator and
B: I'm worried they'd hang it on me if I did.

Don't they get pretty good sized? I've seen a few in person and thought they looked (size wise) roughly equal to soft shells. But amazing animals, and I wish they were A: Smaller and B: more obtainable.

eh, you can always have one stubborn pair. But just, in general, getula aren't hard to breed (IMO). I was responding to Berkley saying he'd heard they were difficult.

gbin: i suspect at least part of it is just the time required. We're dealing with animals that can regularly live 20+ years, so judging long term impacts will take a damn long time.

I've never had it. And I've had pet herps since I was about 12.

Wash your damn hands. I had typical adolescent male levels of cleanliness throughout my teenage years but even so, I did wash my hands after handling critters and cleaning cages (I mean, that's just freaking GROSS not to).

I'm kind of surprised your garters burrow. I have a pair in a naturalistic tank and they don't.
Now, when kept on aspen nearly everything I've tried burrows. But my garters typically hide 2/3 under some logs or leaf litter in their tank.

There's lots of different things that could impact it; inappropriate prey items, too many prey items, too few prey items...you're just jumping to the conclusion that, in this case, it is obviously the type of prey item. At first? A camera and that's it. I figure after taxes it'd be ~300 million. I'd sink about 20 million into very low risk/low reward investments as a hedge (even 1-2% annual returns on that is enough to live on incredibly well), then plow the rest into mutual funds, and let it have 3-4 years to grow...

When I bred roaches, I gave them whatever was cheap from the produce section and decent dog food and cricket chow. Pretty good results.

For mice I used a seed mix and mazuri.

I often have to deall with people talking about how they had to kill a rattlesnake because they have dogs or any other lame excuse Depends on where the snake is. iirc in nature they eat ants and termites so that wouldn't surprise me.

I don't agree with Kelly MC often but I kind of do here. They're not suited for captivity, let alone for the bulk pet trade @ 25 bucks a pop.

the issue with Draco seems to be eating--they need *very* small prey for thier size, and seem reluctant to eat in captivity. At least based on my limited sample size.

I've heard awful things about Draco in captivity; I know 3-4 people that have tried them, no one's gotten one to survive longer than a month or so. At this rate, I'd just say leave them be.
