Animals in water?

Does anyone have ideas for taking shots of animals that are submerged in water? There's a pond or two here with a great population of diving beetles and I can't get a shot worth a crap. They're always overexposed, or you can't see the animal through the water...how do you get those shots to turn out...

Re: Field herping in DREAMS?

I've had herp related dreams yeah  What sucks is I'm always finding stuff in my dreams I'd kill to find IRL. Like reticulated collared lizards, banded geckos, eastern indigos...*sigh* This week I had a dream that I found a nest of rattlesnakes (indeterminate species) under my couch. edit: Awww,...

Re: San Diego County freaks - why I go out when nobody else

Hows' the care on the shovel nosed? I've been trying to decide on some unusual small colubrids to work with, and I'm bouncing back and forth between lyre snakes, long-nose snakes, and shovel nosed or patch nosed. I have, and like, kings and house snakes and pythons but I want something a bit differe...

I don't think I've *ever* herped a real abberant...one or two possible hybrids, one or two diamondbacks that had funky patterns (not too extreme)...that's been it.

Re: REPOST: Three-Ring King Rat Circus

I've seen some king rats that had vivid black and yellow coloration as adults, and pictures of others that look like those; more brownish...is it a locale thing, or is it just polymorphic?? I'd always assumed it was age related color change but those are still brown and are pretty big.

two of my cousin's are in Albq. Tried to go herping last year only to come down sick on the trip
Ever see any blacktails? Those are on my life list...I spend time in NM semi regulalry but it's always for some family emergency (funerals, sicknesses etc).

Re: VA salamanders and some odds and ends

all of ya'll with the major diversity of salamanders make me jealous. All we got around here are tigers and even those aren't terribly common (I've seen 2-3 since I moved here).
Some of those...wow. That first one looked like the night sky man. Just astonishing.

Amphibians and Reptiles of New Mexico, by Degenhardt et al. Good information for most of NM's herps. Includes notes on natural history, range, etc. Texas Snakes, Werler and Dixon. Great amount of info on our serpents. I'll second "The Keeper and the Kept." My parents gave me that for Chris...

Re: 5/31 Palo Duro Canyon

Hey, PD is a great spot :) I've found a prairie or two there, but mostly atrox. The un-ID'd lizard is a checkered whiptail, very common on the lighthouse trail. I get down to PD several times per month when I can. Good to see other panhandlers here! Try the running trail for collared lizards there b...

Re: Thus far in CA

try Nerodia...it's freaking horrible. I used to think Thamnophis was bad but during my first year in texas, I tried to catch a water snake...got pooped on, musked on, and bit. One hell of a reek. It worked too, I leave 'em alone now  not worth trying to catch 'em when I can find 'em any day of ...

Re: Texas Panhandle, June 5-7

There's one that lives in/near my mom's compost heap. Seems to lay it's eggs and overwinter (during what Houstonians call a winter) in it. I peek in and say high about once a visit  Gotta love it. She's a beauty.

There ain't a part of this state without amazing herpetofauna. I love it  My folks live in the suburbs of houston and I've seen buttermilk racers, nerodia, texas rats and thamnophis in their yard. They've got what sounds like a mud snake that frequents the neighborhood but I ain't seen it y...

I had no idea your part of Europe had that much lizard diversity. Those are some seriously neat animals man.

Also props on the tortoise! Killer find.
