Arkansas Early Summer Herping Mega Report
This is a continuation of my earlier post: Arkansas Spring Herping Mega Report - Some Less Common Sp. ----- Last weekend our illustrious Kelly Irwin came up to pay a visit. One of his buddies from his Kansas days was in town to see his family and I had a couple of herp specimens I had been holding f...

Us Arkansas herpers definitely know what amount of time and work it takes to turn up this much diversity. Congratulations on your success! Photographically Missed or Captured Herping Finds...?
Two questions. Answer A, B, or both.
A) What is the herping find you beat yourself up about the most because you somehow didn't have your camera on hand to photograph it?
B) What is the herping find no one would believe without the photographs you were able to capture to prove it?

My ritual is to go to a spot a few days after my friends have seen lots of stuff there and see absolutely nothing. I thought it was to make sure you brought your camera. ;) For me, it's make sure I have 2 ways to get into a locked vehicle (key and electronic door opener on separate key chains) and ...

What IS with that slider? I figure you mean the "freaky" one? Red-eared slider. Definitely an odd one, but that's it. Thanks for all other comments, everyone. Getting all of these species this spring has taken some combination of hitting KNOWN localities (in favor of scouting new sites), ...

More... ----- I probably should be putting my time to better use, like advancing work on the AR Herp Atlas?, but I've actually been out herping quite a lot this spring. Re: Request - Change the home page map.
Actually, just to clarify, date entered and date observed are not the same. Clicking on the "date" column sorts by date observed. It is not possible to sort by date entered. The only way to see records as they are entered is to go to "new records," but you can't view them sorted...

Also, I may be in the minority, but just throwing this out... When you click on a state from the homepage, could the default sort order be by date (most recent to earliest) rather than taxonomy? Re: What type of flashlights are you guys/gals using?
I know this boils down to personal preference and experience, but I've come to dislike headlamps of any kind for herping. Main reason is for the flying gnats that swarm my face in their attraction to the light source. Just something to think about.

Yep, I once had to CAREFULLY free a Copperhead found in a similar circumstance using my pocket knife. Snake did have some wounds, but looked to be a relatively fresh find, and crawled off just fine once freed. (Didn't have my camera on me to document it.) The netting was being used in a state park. :?

Just heard an interview on NPR about the birds. All were red-wing blackbirds. All 17 tested showed internal bleeding... A sign of blunt force trauma. During these migrations....do you see an even sex ratio or is it skewed one way or the other? I don't usually look all that closely, but the majority appear to be male. Question about dark paired dots on top of some snake heads
Not exactly field trip related... I teach herpetology at a summer ecology camp for 11 and 12-year olds and we talk a lot about the "why's" of how herps are built and patterned. Almost every year I get asked at least once about the purpose of the paired dots on the top of a Copperhead's hea...
