I created a small board area in the Santa Ana Mountains, east of the toll Fwy and S of the 91 Fwy, that got trashed after the first rain of the season. Hubbs has a great book out on zonata, once you get a hold of a copy, you can't stop finding them. I found one by lifting my pillow the other night, and according to hubbs' book that was because it was the right season and the humidity was high. ;) All kidding aside, I have the best luck after a rain.

Re: MAN INJURED WHILE SAVING A SNAPPING TURTLE!

Picking it up by the tail is the safest way to move the turtle, you'll be out of the reach of the turtles long neck and dangerous jaws. As far as harming the turtle, doubtful, but certainly being picked up by the tail is preferred by the turtle, than having its shell and head crushed by a tire. Good...

Yes, the HERP DATA record (Phil's) is certainly a Spiny Softshell, most likely a female. As for Identifying it to subspecies level, I can not identify it that specifically, because frankly, I don't have any experience with the subspecies. The other picture, I cant even make out that it is a turtle :D

Yeah I know how you feel, I usually don’t bother stopping for crotes either (aka dung or as most call it excrement). Dude, there are more than 4 dungs in that area, so it will be hard narrowing that down, but the rattler is interesting. :thumb:
