Database Entries over the years-Totals

Post by Brian Hubbs »

If anyone is interested in how we have progressed in our data entry over the years, here are the Historical Scorecards since the beginning of the HERP database:

http://www.naherp.com/reports/national- ... ?year=2006
http://www.naherp.com/reports/national- ... ?year=2007
http://www.naherp.com/reports/national- ... ?year=2008
http://www.naherp.com/reports/national- ... ?year=2009
http://www.naherp.com/reports/national- ... ?year=2010
http://www.naherp.com/reports/national- ... ?year=2011
http://www.naherp.com/reports/national- ... ?year=2012
http://www.naherp.com/reports/national- ... ?year=2013

So far, 2013 is our best year, with over 36,000 Vouchered entries. We now have almost 160,000 records in the database. It's never too late to get involved. We need everyone's help. I didn't get involved until 2009. :o
The links should be working...it takes about 10 seconds for them to load.

Here are the total VOUCHERED records entered by year (These totals do not count Un-Vouchered records):

2006-771
2007-5,180
2008-6,377
2009-8,833
2010-23,594 (Whoa-big increase)
2011-32,030
2012-30,885
2013-36,039+ (This is not the final total yet, but it is an increase of over 5,000 records from last year :) )

Un-Vouchered Records-15,638

My thanks to Don Becker (psyon) for creating these links.

Can you only imagine where things would be if you would have been involved from the get. The numbers would just be mind blowing!

Well, there might be 10,000 more records, but maybe not...it would depend on how quickly I got motivated. When are you going to get really motivated? ;) I think you can get more than 52 records in one day where you live...think Lizards. Lot's of lizards. :thumb:
I added more to the original post. Now you can see the totals by year. :)

Having to tote around a gps and then manually transferring co ordinates from it really turned me off to the whole thing. If all I have to do is point my camera and snap (and remember where the hell I was) then you are correct, fifty in an outing would not be a problem. I'll go out on a limb and pledge at least 250 entries for NV in 2014.
To what do you attribute the 15,000 record jump in 2010?

I attribute the jump to more people getting involved because Jonathan promoted the contests. I know he got my attention when he did that, and I try to kick everyone's ass every year, because I can and I know how to do it fast. :)

As for gps, I have never toted a hand-held gps device. I use the little wrench tool on the entry form and dial down to where i found the animals and CLICK. I simply write on a note paper where I stop and take my pics, or photograph the nearest street sign or landmark. Then it's easy to find the spot on the google earth image that the wrench provides. Also, if I take pics of 20 lizards at the same stop, I simply copy the first record and use the copied entry form to enter the next one. There is a copy button on your completed entry. The gps spot will appear on the new entry form and you just click in the new spot for the gps. It takes no more than 30 seconds to enter each consecutive animal from the same location, as long as you re-size your pics down to 1MB or less in photoshop first. I think there are a lot of people out there who think they need a gps device, and they DON'T... :o If I had to type in the gps for all my entries I would never have gotten as many as I have. I also do not fill in all the fields on the form. I see no reason to list the moon phase, temp, humidity, barometer, etc. I keep it to the minimum-Name, age, quantity, how found, date, time, and habitat. If someone wants to know more about that day, they can look it up on a weather site.

There, I think I emphasized the 3 things most people do not understand about entering data.

You enter 250 next year...I'm going to enter 3,000 faster than you can enter those 250... :o 8-)

Here's another trick, don't even get out of your car for uta and other lizard pics if you can see them from your window. Take the pic from the vehicle. ;)
