Changed activity map

Post by Don Becker »

I changed the color scale to reflect the counts based on the average number of records in recorded counties. The last green box represents the average.

The diversity map is the same way too. Right now it counts individual taxa, but I hope to change it to be based on species counts soon.

Is there any way to change the colors or something? I have one hell of a hard time telling all those shades apart.

I used the colors that weather sites use for radar... I am open to other suggestions.

The shades are too similar. Even if you have to break it down into bigger ranges (say green equals 1-5 species), using primary colors might be better. Stick with yellow, blue, red, green, black, white maybe? Shades of colors can be pretty difficult for some of us to distinguish.

ok, the diversity map is based on species now, not individual taxa. But... I also put it back to being based on the max number. I think that is a better representation that way, since the max number of species that a county can have is a somewhat finite value, and will better represent actual diversity overall in the long run.

The activity map I still have where the middle of the color grade is roughly the average, as I think that better shows what areas are being actively herped, and which arent.

A better activity map might actually be to show colors based on the age of the most recent record added, but do it by week or month rather than year like the primary map. Not sure what I would call the map based on record counts though then.

So will the scale automatically change as the average number of records per county increases?

Yes, the scale will change. It calculates the color scale on the fly.

Also, here is a map showing activity based on the date of most recent sighting for a county.

Something is seriously wrong with that map, or at least how it's showing up on my screen.
